Caño Negro is a protected wildlife refuge located in the northern lowlands of Costa Rica, near the border with Nicaragua. Covering over 9,900 hectares, it is one of the country's most important wetland ecosystems and serves as a critical habitat for migratory birds and other wildlife. The refuge centers around the Caño Negro Lagoon and the Río Frío, which flood the surrounding plains during the rainy season (typically May to November), creating an extensive wetland that attracts a high concentration of bird species such as jabirus, roseate spoonbills, wood storks, and various types of herons and egrets. In addition to its significance for birdlife, Caño Negro supports a diverse range of fauna including caimans, river turtles, iguanas, monkeys, and freshwater fish. Guided boat tours are the primary way to explore the area, offering visitors the chance to navigate the Río Frío and observe animals in their natural environment. As part of the larger Arenal Huetar Norte Conservation Area, Caño Negro is managed by Costa Rica’s National System of Conservation Areas (SINAC) and plays a vital role in regional biodiversity conservation and environmental education.
