Experience a varied trip through two of Central America’s most wildlife-rich countries, designed for travellers who want depth, contrast and time in places where nature is king.

You’ll begin in San José, the capital of Costa Rica, before heading north to Caño Negro, a remote mosaic of lagoons, forest and waterways close to the Nicaraguan border. This lesser-visited region is known for its birdlife, amphibians and mammals, and can be explored with naturalist guides; your high-end tented camp places you inside the landscape, with the sounds of the forest all around.

From here, you travel south to the Caribbean coast and settle in Puerto Viejo. Days are spent exploring Cahuita National Park, where coral reefs sit just offshore and rainforest trails run alongside the beach. Snorkelling, gentle walks and unhurried time by the sea define this part of the journey.

Crossing into Panama, you’ll spend three nights in the Bocas del Toro archipelago, based on Isla Colón. Calm waters offer the chance to spot dolphins, rays and colourful reef life, while time ashore gives a sense of island life away from the crowds. Head inland to the cloud forests of Boquete, where misty forests and expert bird guides offer the possibility of seeing the resplendent quetzal.

Returning to Costa Rica via a different border, the adventure continues to the Osa Peninsula, one of the most biologically dense areas in the region. Here, guided excursions on land and on the calm waters of the Golfo Dulce reveal rainforest wildlife and rich marine ecosystems. Your final nights are spent near Uvita on the Pacific coast, close to Marino Ballena National Park, where seasonal whale watching rounds off the experience before your return to San José and, eventually, back home.

This itinerary suits travellers with a strong interest in wildlife, who enjoy varied landscapes, active days and travel that supports conservation and local communities.

Itinerary

Depart the UK today on your chosen flight to San José, the capital of Costa Rica. On arrival, you're met by a local representative and driven to your hotel for the evening, where you're at leisure to relax after your flight.
You're collected from your San José hotel this morning and driven north towards the border with Nicaragua. The drive takes about four hours, and you eventually arrive at the remote, lesser-visited Caño Negro Wetlands region. Here, you stay on a full-board basis at a unique tented lodge, surrounded by wildlife and nature.
Today, you have the chance to explore one of Central America's most important wetland areas, the Caño Negro Wetlands - a wonderful habitat for nature. The experience is operated by your lodge and typically takes place from the water in an isolated refuge with incredible wildlife diversity. There are said to be 350 bird species in the area; as you explore, you're given information on how everything fits into the wetland ecosystem. In the shallows, you might see caimans and turtles, while in the trees, there are great chances of seeing monkeys and sloths. There's also a lizard called the 'Jesus Christ lizard', known for its ability to walk on water. From the array of birdlife, some highlight species include the anhinga (snakebird), roseate spoonbill, wood storks, and the jabiru - the largest bird in Central America, and very endangered.
Today, you'll travel almost the full length of the country, as you drive from the northern region of Caño Negro all the way down to the Southern Caribbean Coast, home to the laid-back town of Puerto Viejo. The driving time today is over six hours, but there are stops built into the journey, and you have the remainder of the afternoon free to relax at your hotel.
Experience the best of Cahuita National Park, where you can enjoy a combination of snorkelling on one of the most important reef areas of Costa Rica and also spot wildlife in the protected rainforest area along the beach. Today's potential highlights include various coral species, tropical fish, and possibly sea turtles, among other aquatic wildlife. On land, there are chances to see various types of snakes, sloths, monkeys, anteaters, raccoons, butterflies and birds, as well as medicinal plants, orchids, trees and bromeliads.
Travel along the Caribbean Coast towards the border, crossing into Panama at Sixoala. Here, you change into a Panamanian vehicle and continue on the road towards Almirante, before then switching to a speed boat that takes you to the small town of Bocas del Toro, on Isla Colon - your base for the next few nights on the Caribbean Coast.

On your first day in Bocas del Toro, discover different shades and tones of the fascinating Bocas del Toro Archipelago with this excursion to beautiful beaches hidden within the lush vegetation of some of its islands. Pass through mangrove forests and explore varied marine life in crystalline waters at atolls surrounded by barrier reefs; this is a true submarine paradise, ideal for diving and snorkelling. Stop at Laguna de Bocatoritos, where you may be fortunate enough to watch dolphins dance around boats. Continue to Coral Cay for snorkelling amongst colourful fish. Later, relax time at the attractive beach of Zapatilla Cays, two of the most beautiful islands of the archipelago, located within the boundaries of Isla Bastimentos National Marine Park.

On the second day in Bocas del Toro, take time to relax or do some more exploring of this beautiful stretch of coastline.

After being collected, first travel by boat back to Chiriquí Grande on the mainland, then continue by road to Boquete (a journey of approximately three hours). You'll then arrive at your accommodation and base in Boquete in the cloud forest, and have the remainder of the afternoon at leisure.
Explore the surrounding area of Boquete and walk the Quetzal Trail, one of Panama’s most iconic hikes. The route stretches approximately nine kilometres one way through the lush cloud forests of Volcán Barú National Park, offering a challenging yet rewarding experience. Along the way, pass misty ridges, cross crystalline streams, and discover habitats teeming with biodiversity, with opportunities to spot the elusive resplendent quetzal, one of Central America's star bird species. The trek involves more than 1,000 metres of elevation. At the top, you're rewarded with panoramic views, pristine nature and a sense of immersion in Panama’s highland wilderness.
You're driven to the Costa Rica border, but this time on the Pacific side of the country at Paso Canoas (a journey of around two hours). From here, transfer to a Costa Rica vehicle and head towards the town of Golfito on the Osa Peninsula; then continue by boat to your remote rainforest lodge.
The next two full days are spent at your lodge in Golfo Dulce, backing onto the Piedras Blancas National Park. Various activities are included in your stay, including hiking on the reserve trails and using kayaks and snorkelling equipment. There are also guided excursions on the water through the mangroves and into the protected ocean area, as well as on land through the forest in one of the most biodiverse parts of the country, offering excellent wildlife-spotting opportunities.
Head north up the jungle-clad Pacific Coast of Costa Rica towards the small villages of Uvita and Dominical, with access to the Marino Ballena National Park. This park is made famous by its migrating pods of humpback whales, dolphins and wilderness beaches. It teems with wildlife, with dark sands that are important nesting sites for turtles, while coral reefs provide sanctuary to abundant marine life.
See the best of Marino Ballena National Park. Your visits include the famous whale tail of Punta Uvita, Isla Ballena, the Tres Hermanas islets and the Ventanas Beach sea caves. During the tour and in season, you have the opportunity to spot humpback and pilot whales, as well as the three different species of resident dolphins. While travelling by boat, you have lovely views back onto the Costa Ballena, plus diverse pelagic birdlife that can be seen on the islets and the Ventanas beach caves. Humpback whales that arrive at the national park in the period from July to October come from the southern hemisphere. In the season from December to April, they come from the Northern Hemisphere, as they regularly pass through the Pacific Ocean and Costa Ballena on their migration to and from feeding and mating areas.
Conclude by driving back further up the rugged, wildlife-rich Pacific Coast before heading inland towards San José and your chosen international flights. The total journey time today is around four hours.
