Set departure dates are possible for these mobile riding safaris with a 6 night option in the Chyulu Hills and a 7 night in the Amboseli. Alternatively private departures can be arranged for 2-10 participants of any duration.
Chyulu Hills Ride, the most popular signature horse safari, is ideal for families and novice riders has been popular since the start of Ride Kenya. The range of scenery and terrain are perfect for both horse and rider. The wildlife on this ride is more spread out than that of the Amboseli Ride, but there are great sightings nonetheless. It is an ideal itinerary for families, or less-experienced riders.
Amboseli Ride, encounters more of the big five and better suited for the more advanced rider with longer days in the saddle at a faster pace.
Depart from London on overnight flight to Nairobi
On arrival you will be transferred to the domestic airport for light aircraft flight into the Chyulu Hills where you will be met by your riding guide and transferred into campsite which is nestled in Acacia woodland. After lunch you will be introduced to the horses and staff, the group will be assessed and you will set out on your first afternoon ride. Return to your camp late afternoon, for a hot shower, enjoy a drink around the fire to watch the sunset and a three course dinner before retiring for the evening.
Early wake up call to be ready to depart at dawn on horse back to take in the best part of the day, exploring forest and savannah around camp. Nomadic Maasai own the land and often villages can be seen en-route. Full English breakfast is usually under the shade of an Acacia tree before return to camp for a rest in the heat of the day. This afternoon will be a guided walk, giving you a chance to stretch your legs and learn about the flora and fauna of the area.
Dawn depart on morning game drive in the Amboseli National Park which has lovely views of Mount Kilimanjaro and excellent chance of seeing the big five. Return to camp for lunch and afternoon horse ride
This morning horse ride towards Chyulu East National Park with packed breakfast. Late lunch will be at Crater camp which is in a forest next to a large extinct volcanic crater, over looking plains that lead up to Mount Kilimanjaro. In the afternoon, opportunity to climb into volcanic crater looking for the very rare Verreaux’s Eagle which nests in the rocky outcrops at the rim or explore the lava tubes under the crater which are jagged caves stretch away from the crater, previously used as shelter by hunter gatherers.
Breakfast in camp before ascending 2,000 feet into the some times misty Chyulu Hills giving you views of the wilderness of Tsavo East National Park to the east, and Mount Kilimanjaro and Amboseli National Park to the west. Just outside one of the largest mist forests, enjoy a picnic lunch and then head into the forest on foot looking for buffalo, leopard, Syke’s monkey and giant forest hog. Descend the hills past a subsistence farmers’ villages. Next stop will be Olecuto Camp in time to settle in for the evening before dinner.
Full day ride exploring the beautiful and remote forests of Olecutu with herds of giraffe, gazelle, zebra and wildebeest. Which then give way to the Inchalai swamps with herds of elephant and often Maasai herdsmen and women watering their livestock. Barbecue lunch on a beautiful rocky outcroppings before riding across the savannah into camp for the night.
Breakfast in camp before your light aircraft flight back to Nairobi for return overnight flight to London. Flights onto the Masai Mara for further game viewing can be arranged or perhaps some relation on the Kenya coast or Zanzibar.
