Explore a wide variety of landscapes in Costa Rica on a 12-day journey through rainforest canals, volcanic slopes, cloud forest and coastal national parks.
This well-paced route is ideal if you want a broad introduction to the country’s wildlife and scenery, with guided excursions balanced by time to relax or explore independently.
You’ll begin in Tortuguero’s remote waterways, where boat travel is part of daily life. Here, quiet canals and dense forest create excellent conditions for wildlife watching, with monkeys, sloths and a diverse range of birdlife often seen from the water. From there, continue to the Arenal region, home to forest trails and old lava flows that sit in the shadow of the volcano. Walk to La Fortuna Waterfall, look for creatures along the trails and soak in the hot springs heated by the earth below.
Crossing Lake Arenal brings you to Monteverde’s cloud forest, the hanging bridges taking you into the treetops and the guided night walks revealing the forest after dark. Your final days are then spent on the Pacific Coast near Manuel Antonio National Park. Guided walks introduce you to monkeys, sloths and tropical birds, while time on the beach offers a relaxed end to the trip.
Overall, it’s an itinerary that works well if you want to experience Costa Rica’s key regions, with local guides sharing their knowledge of the forests and wildlife throughout.

Itinerary
Day 1 | Fly UK to Costa Rica
Day 2 | San José – Tortuguero National Park
This morning, you're picked up early to travel to Tortuguero. On the way, enjoy an early introduction to the natural highlights on offer in Costa Rica as the road passes the protected Braulio Carrillo National Park; you'll then make your way through agricultural farmland, home to many pineapple and banana plantations, before arriving at the pier to board your boat to Tortuguero.
Tortuguero National Park is one of the most important nesting sites in the world for green sea turtles, and its boundaries protect not only the turtle-nesting beach but also the surrounding forests, canals and lagoons. Everything in Tortuguero centres on the waterways, and access is by boat or air only. A visit to Tortuguero is the ideal place to start a trip to Costa Rica, offering great opportunities to spot key wildlife.
Stay at your chosen lodge for two nights on a full-board basis, including all meals and excursions.
Day 3 | Tortuguero National Park
Day 4 | Tortuguero National Park – Arenal Volcano
Day 5 - 6 | Arenal Volcano
Visit La Fortuna Waterfall, located near Arenal Volcano National Park in an area rich with vegetation. This beautiful waterfall has its source in La Fortuna River, and you have the opportunity to take a gently undulating hike into the forest to get to the 70-metre-high waterfall. At the base of the waterfall, there's a 'natural pool', where you can swim in fresh water and admire the surrounding rainforest before returning to your hotel.
On your third day in the Arenal area, enjoy a walk along the old lava beds in Arenal Volcano National Park. You're given some history of the volcano and have a chance to see abundant wildlife along the trail and in the surrounding tropical forest. At the end of the tour, head back to La Fortuna, where you have access to the local hot springs. Bathe in the thermal waters before dinner with the rumbling of the volcano in the distance.
Day 7 | Arenal Volcano – Monteverde Cloud Forest
Day 8 | Monteverde Cloud Forest
Day 10 - 11 | Manuel Antonio National Park
Manuel Antonio National Park is one of the most popular in the country thanks to its wide variety of flora and fauna specimens. It's home to three of the four existing monkey species in Costa Rica and boasts three trails, ranging from flat to very steep. Accompanied by a knowledgeable nature guide, explore a three-kilometre trail that loops through the park, with plenty of opportunities to spot sloths, birds and reptiles, as well as unusual orchids, butterflies and tropical trees.
On your third day in the Manuel Antonio area, you have time to relax and explore the beautiful beaches. As one of Costa Rica's most protected areas, the 683 hectares of mangrove swamps and beaches are home to a wide variety of flora and fauna. Within the park, there's also good hiking for viewing a host of wildlife. Aside from the park, other options include sea kayaking, mountain biking, canopy tours, scuba diving and deep-sea fishing.
