This two-week self-drive is a circular trip around Namibia that takes in the most famous highlights including: the Africat project at Okonjima, game viewing in the world-famous Etosha National Park, tracking rhino in the stark and mesmerising deserts in the Damaraland, visiting the coastal town of Swakopmund and last by no means least, climbing the towering dunes of the Sossusvlei. ref 564658

Throughout you stay in top quality camps, lodges and guesthouses. We can tailor-make any itinerary and this self-drive is an example of what other travellers have enjoyed. Namibia is the perfect destination for those who like to be on the move and who enjoy a holiday that is varied and full of activity.

Itinerary

Depart from London Heathrow on overnight flight to Johannesburg.
On arrival make onward connect to Windhoek, you will be met and given a self drive briefing before collecting your Nissan X trail hire vehicle with air-conditioning, comprehensive insurance and unlimited mileage. A three hour drive north takes you to Okonjima, the home of Africat, for a 1 night stay at Plains Camp, dinner and breakfast included. Namibia contains just over twenty percent of the world’s cheetah population, and Okonjima is the base for the Africat Foundation, an organisation devoted to saving and caring for the country's big cats.
Leaving Okonjima, you'll drive north for game viewing in Etosha, the day ends at Onguma Bush Camp for a 2 night stay on the eastern side of the park , breakfast and dinner included. Onguma Game Reserve is situated on the Eastern Border of Etosha National Park is the 34 000 hectare private game reserve. Within minutes of the famous Etosha National Park, this private reserve is perfectly located to take in the abundance of wildlife in the area.
Here you can choose to do your own game drives in Etosha or be guided in the private reserve with a professional guide. This 34 000 hectare reserve has superb wildlife missing only the Buffalo to be called a big five reserve.
Staying at   Onguma Game Reserve
From Onguma you'll head to the southern part of the park, to stay for a 2 night stay at a premier waterhole chalet of the Okaukuejo Camp. The location of the Okaukuejo rest camps is one of the best as they are overlooking flood lit waterholes. From here it is easy to game view just from the comfort of your balcony.
Wildlife is abundant here as they congregate around waterholes - their only source of water. You will find many different species of animals all together - this is very unusual anywhere else!
Staying at   Okaukuejo Rest Camp
Travel southwest for a 2 night stay at Grootberg. Perched on the edge of the Grootberg Plateau, overlooking the Klip River Valley, Grootberg Lodge has spectacular views. Situated on a large private concession, this welcoming lodge is fully owned by the local Khoadi/Hoas community. Built from rock and thatch, the 12 chalets are tastefully furnished, all with small private decks that look out over the gorge. Well positioned for self-drivers – roughly midway between Etosha and Swakopmund – there is much to do here.
Damaraland is a land of stark desert beauty. Morning mists, created by the clash between the icy Atlantic Ocean air and the warm desert air of the Skeleton Coast, glide inland along the canyons, giving sustenance to the flora and fauna of the region. Guided walks on the plateau, scenic drives, hikes to the Klip River Springs, elephant and Black rhino tracking, are all offered, as well as visits to a traditional Himba settlement. Experienced riders can explore on horseback.
Staying at   Grootberg Lodge
En route visit the Petrified Forest, the Organ Pipes and the famous Twyfelfontein rock engravings all highly recommended. Head south along the tail end of Skeleton Coast toward Swakopmund for a 2 night stay at the cosy Cornerstone Guest House which is within easy walking distance of restaurants and shops. The perfect base for local activities such as the Turnstone Tour with Bruno Nebe - or try your hand at the kayaking from Pelican Point with the wonderful Jeanne Meintjes, and the opportunity to drift past colonies of seals, or even watch the heavy side dolphins as they follow the kayaks!
We highly suggest that you do a cruise from Walvis Bay to see the seals as well as the Dolphins that play along side the boat as you go past. Bird life here is great and you get to taste some Namibian Oysters with some sparkling wine!
Drive inland to Sossusvlei to spend 2 night stay at Sossusvlei Lodge. Sossusvlei Lodge is a good value lodge situated right by the entrance to the Namib Naukluft Park and the dunes at Sossusvlei. This makes it a great base for early starts into the Park as soon as the gate opens. Because of its location, a major effort was made to build something that blends with the landscape, and this was pretty much achieved with skillful use of colour and building materials.
From here you can explore the towering bright orange dunes at Sossusvlei, walk across the quiet and ghostly Dead Vlei, or even try your hand at ascending one of the dunes; the views are simply spectacular! Why not treat yourself to a balloon flight over the dunes, ending with a champagne breakfast on terra firma.
Staying at   Sossusvlei Lodge
Due to the distance back to Windhoek, the last night will be at the Olive Grove Guest House, breakfast included. You will have the evening to unwind, enjoy a local meal and have an unhurried journey to the airport for your onward flight the next day
Staying at   Olive Grove
Drive to Windhoek Airport, return your hire car and check in for flight to Johannesburg, which will connect with return overnight flight to London.
