One of the first cities to be founded in the Americas in 1524, Granada is situated on Lake Nicaragua just an hour and a half away from the capital Managua and is undeniably Nicaragua's most attractive city. It preserves much of its colonial heritage in its buildings and squares and is a very pleasant place to relax and spend a few days. The city lies at the foot of the Mombacho volcano and is a base from which to explore the lake, volcanoes, the famous craft market at Masaya, the Zapatera archipelago and Isla de Ompete.
A trip to Isla de Ometepe (or Ometepe Island) is a highlight of any trip to Nicaragua and not to be missed. Ometepe is the largest freshwater island in the world and with its two volcanoes sits majestically in the south-west corner of Lake Nicaragua. Our standard trip offers you a two night stay on the island and begins with a guided excursion around the active Concepcion Volcano to meet with indigenous artisans and a visit to the town of Altagracia. Also included are hiking in the cloudforest of the Maderas Volcano, a full time bi-lingual guide and private ground transfers. Accommodation is at the Hotel Villa Paraiso, a simple lodge located above the Santo Domingo beach on the isthmus between the two volcanoes. A wonderful setting, the lodge is peaceful with lake views, bird watching and good food.
About 110 km to the north of Grenada, León is Nicaragua's second city. Originally founded by the Spanish it rivals Grenada for the largest number of colonial churches and private mansions. Considered to be the political and intellectual centre, León is the home of Nicaragua's university, founded in 1813 and the second oldest in Central America.
