Crossing the Drake Passage is the first stage of your journey into Antarctica, taking you from the southern tip of South America towards the South Shetland Islands. As the ship heads into more frigid waters, keep your eyes peeled for albatrosses, giant petrels and other seabirds that oftentimes soar alongside your chosen vessel. As the first icebergs start to appear, you’ll know that you’re approaching the frozen, white continent. Take this time on board to settle into your surroundings and make use of facilities (many ships offer a gym, sauna or observation lounge). Your expedition team will also introduce you to Antarctica’s diverse marine life, environment and history, as well as the biosecurity procedures you’ll follow before your first landing.
