Discover three of the Southern Ocean’s most stark, yet wildlife-rich destinations on this expedition cruising adventure pairing the Falkland Islands with South Georgia and Antarctica.
This is a journey with AE Expeditions into three untamed wilderness areas. Here, the dramatic mountain scenery, vast glaciers and ice-filled waters provide the backdrop to some of the greatest wildlife encounters you can experience on the planet.
Your adventure begins in Buenos Aires, Argentina’s captivating capital. Spend two nights trawling through colourful neighbourhoods and admiring the elegant architecture and vibrant culture before flying south to Ushuaia, the world’s southernmost city and gateway to the continent of Antarctica.
From here, board the Greg Mortimer, a purpose-built expedition ship designed to explore remote pockets inaccessible on other cruise ships. Discover the rugged beauty of the Falkland Islands, home to a variety of seabirds and penguins, before continuing to South Georgia, where enormous colonies of king penguins, elephant seals and fur seals gather on the black-sand and pebble beaches.
The journey then heads towards the Antarctic Peninsula, with its magnificent icebergs, towering glaciers and snow-covered mountains creating a striking polar landscape. Days are shaped by the conditions of the Southern Ocean. For instance, you can join Zodiac excursions into sheltered bays, venture ashore on guided walks and watch for whales, seals and seabirds from the ship’s deck.
All the while on board, the expedition team will share their expert knowledge of the region’s wildlife, history and extraordinary environment, bringing each place you visit to life.

Also, keep up to date on the latest requirements and application procedures, as they’re subject to change.
Itinerary
Day 5 | Embark Greg Mortimer & Set Sail
Day 6 | At Sea
Day 7 - 8 | Falkland Islands
Discover the beautiful and windswept Falkland Islands, a wildlife haven comprising two main islands and hundreds of smaller islands. The rugged coastlines and white sandy beaches provide a habitat for an impressive variety of wildlife, including penguins, seals, sea lions and the world’s largest colony of black-browed albatrosses.
Your experienced expedition team will plan each day’s activities around the prevailing weather and wildlife opportunities. Zodiac excursions and shore landings should also be available, so you can delve into rocky coves, visit penguin rookeries and observe seabirds nesting on the cliffs.
Conditions permitting, you may also visit Stanley, the charming capital of the Falklands, with its distinctly British character, colourful buildings, traditional pubs and fascinating maritime history.
Day 9 - 10 | At Sea
Day 11 | Arrive in South Georgia
As you approach South Georgia, prepare to be captivated by its dramatic scenery. Jagged mountain peaks rise above a stretch of coastline, with a mix of glaciers, fjords and bays that combine to create an extraordinary landscape. The island is home to some of the world’s largest concentrations of wildlife and has a fascinating history of exploration and whaling.
Weather and sea conditions will determine your arrival time and activities. If conditions permit, you may pass close to the impressive Shag Rocks on your approach to the island.
Day 12 - 14 | South Georgia
Spend several days scouring the landscapes of South Georgia for wildlife. Your expedition team will plan each day's activities according to the weather and sea conditions.
Join Zodiac excursions on the rugged coastline and search for nesting penguins, seals and seabirds. On shore, you may be able to visit king penguin colonies, walk among elephant seals and Antarctic fur seals, and explore the island’s grassy plains and glacial landscapes.
South Georgia is also closely associated with the story of Sir Ernest Shackleton. Depending on conditions, you may visit historic whaling stations and sites connected to his journey.
There may also be time for scenic cruising through spectacular fjords and along glacier fronts, providing excellent opportunities for photography and wildlife watching.
Day 15 | South Georgia / At Sea
Day 16 - 17 | At Sea
Sail across the Scotia Sea towards the Antarctic Peninsula. The expedition team will continue their programme of fascinating lectures and presentations, helping you learn more about Antarctica’s wildlife, history and fragile environment.
There’s also time to relax and enjoy the ship’s facilities. Perhaps unwind in the sauna or watch the Southern Ocean from the observation lounge.
Day 18 - 21 | Antarctic Peninsula
Prepare for one of the highlights of your expedition as you arrive at the Antarctic Peninsula. The scale and beauty of this frozen wilderness is difficult to comprehend, with sky-scraping icebergs and glaciers in addition to snow-covered mountains stretching endlessly towards the horizon.
Your expedition team will make the most of the windows available, arranging Zodiac cruises and shore excursions according to the weather conditions. Cruise among frosted formations, look out for seals resting on ice floes and watch for whales and penguins in the surrounding waters.
There may be time to visit penguin colonies, head to historic sites and enjoy guided coast walks. You might also cruise through narrow straits and sheltered bays, watching for breaching whales.
With almost 24 hours of daylight during the Antarctic summer, there’s plenty of time to appreciate the silence and feeling of being in one of the most remote places on earth.
Day 22 - 23 | Drake Passage
Enjoy a final opportunity to explore the Antarctic region before beginning your return journey across the Drake Passage towards South America.
As you sail north, you can attend lectures and presentations from the expedition team, watch for seabirds and marine wildlife, and reflect on the memorable experiences of your voyage.
Weather and time permitting, the captain may even sail as close as possible to legendary Cape Horn as you approach the tip of South America.
