Step into a wonderful world full of ice and extraordinary wildlife on this nine-day sailing adventure through Antarctica aboard a responsible, small AE Expeditions ship.

This tour is perfect for those seeking a compact yet immersive introduction to the Antarctic, with expert guides helping shape your days so you can focus on whatever fascinates you most.

Your journey begins in Argentina, where a pre-voyage stay places you in the heart of the local scenery. Comfortable, centrally located accommodation and private transfers ensure you’re ready for the adventure ahead.

From here, set sail across Drake’s Passage to Antarctica, where two full days are devoted to exploring the frozen coastline. Zodiac excursions take you close to colonies of penguins, wandering albatrosses and curious seals, while quieter moments can be spent wandering yourself on secluded beaches or simply soaking in the vistas from the ship’s observation decks. If you’re feeling adventurous, there’s also the chance to take a polar plunge for a truly memorable thrill!

After your Antarctic stopover, the journey continues with a post-voyage stay in Chile. Again, cosy accommodation and private transfers make it very easy to relax here and reflect on the experiences you’ve had over the last few days.

Every day of the journey is flexible, allowing you to focus on wildlife, landscapes or quiet contemplation of the ice-strewn seas. With expert guidance, comfortable surroundings and the freedom to tailor your itinerary, this tour offers a practical, hands-on way to experience one of the world’s most extraordinary regions in a short time.

Itinerary

After flying into Argentina and arriving in Ushuaia, meet with an AE Expeditions representative. Take a private transfer with your fellow travellers to your designated pre-voyage hotel, either Las Hayas Ushuaia Resort or Los Acebos Ushuaia Hotel. Las Hayas Ushuaia Resort is nestled in the hilltops, overlooking snow-capped mountains and the glistening waters of Ushuaia Bay. Meanwhile, the family-friendly Los Acebos Ushuaia Hotel offers spacious suites with mesmerising views over the Beagle Channel.
Check-out of your hotel in the morning. Enjoy some free time before reconvening in the hotel lobby in the afternoon for a short sightseeing tour of the nearby La Misión Neighbourhood. This is where the Anglican pioneers settled before the Argentinian Navy arrived in 1884. Explore the age-old houses lining the streets, the old Government House and the Old Prison Museum. After the tour, embark the Sylvia Earle ship and settle into your cabin. Join a celebratory welcome dinner in the evening to kickstart your adventure.
Set sail across the mighty Drake Passage, crossing towards Antarctica. The crew on board will share important wildlife guidelines and biosecurity procedures, and commence the first of many fascinating talks on Antarctica’s history, environment and endemic wildlife. As the waves propel the ship forwards, take snaps of any seabirds in sight, including albatrosses and giant petrels. On day four, keep your eyes peeled for an iceberg as you approach the South Shetland Islands!
Arriving in Antarctica, the Peninsula and the South Shetland Islands are yours to explore. With 18-25 hours of daylight, you have plenty of time to admire the sights. The experienced expedition team will organise the itinerary here, tailoring each day to suit your interests. You can sail along some of the narrow straits surrounding the offshore islands, explore scenic bays, join a zodiac excursion to search for whales, or stroll along the pebbled beaches to find the best spots for some dramatic photographs.
Fly from King George Island to Punta Arenas, Chile. Upon arrival, take a private transfer to Hotel Dreams del Estrecho for an overnight stay. This hotel offers a calm atmosphere in secluded bliss, placing you amid the stunning scenery. Nearby landmarks include the memorial to Ferdinand Magellan and Plaza de Armas.
After breakfast, part ways with your fellow adventurers and get ready for your journey home. A private transfer to the airport is included.
