Explore three of Brazil’s most remarkable wildlife regions on this in-depth 11-night itinerary, travelling through the Pantanal Wetlands, the Cerrado Savannah and the Amazon Rainforest.

This route is shaped to give you valuable time in lesser-visited landscapes, using overland travel wherever practical so you can take in more of the country’s shifting habitats.

Your journey begins in Cuiabá. Follow the road to Porto Jofre and look out for jaguars along the riverbank, led by local guides who understand every turn of these channels. You’ll then continue to a different lodge, where wetland wildlife ranges from capybara and caiman to a rich mix of birdlife.

Chapada Guimarães comes next: a highland landscape of sandstone cliffs, waterfalls and wide horizons. The Cerrado here supports more than 250 bird species and an extraordinary range of flora and fauna found only in this savannah environment, such as the rare maned wolf. Your guide will help you tune into the details that make this biome so distinctive.

You’ll then follow the road into the southern Amazon, where the rainforest and Cerrado environments combine. Staying at Jardim da Amazônia, you’ll head out on foot and by water to look for elusive primates and unusual bird species, including some found only in this corner of Brazil.

This itinerary suits you if you’re keen to explore areas with fewer international travellers and want to reduce domestic flights, while gaining access to three contrasting wildlife zones from Cuiabá. Road journeys can be long, and accommodation is simple but well-placed, giving you the chance to reach remote lodges and ecosystems where Brazil’s landscapes and wildlife reveal their full variety.

Itinerary

Depart the UK this evening, flying to Brazil overnight, and arrive the following morning in São Paulo, where you connect onto your onward domestic flight to Cuiabá.
Arrive in Cuiabá, the largest city with access to the Northern Pantanal wetlands of Brazil, as well as the southern section of the Amazon Rainforest and the Cerrado Savannah region. You're collected from the airport and driven to your hotel base for the night, where you have the remainder of the day to relax after your overnight travel from the UK.
You're met this morning at your hotel and driven to Porto Jofre in the Pantanal, a five-hour road journey. Along the way, you’ll travel through the savannah ecosystem on a 160-kilometre stretch of the Transpantaneira dirt road. On this impressive photo safari route, sightings of local flora and fauna are common. You'll arrive at your hotel in the Jofre region in time for dinner.
Today, you have an early morning river safari by motorboat, exploring the bays and channels of the Cuiabá River and its tributaries. This region teems with wildlife, including caimans, capybaras, giant river otters, hundreds of bird species and, of course, the iconic jaguar. Return to the lodge for lunch, then set out again in the afternoon to continue wildlife viewing until sunset. Dinner and lunch are included in your stay at the lodge.
Today, you have another early morning river safari by motorboat in search of more wildlife, such as jaguars, before you're then transferred to your next Pantanal lodge via the Transpantaneira, near Poconé. The journey takes approximately three hours, and there's scope to include stops for wildlife viewing and to enjoy the scenery.
Over the next two full days, you'll be based at your lodge and have included tours with an expert local guide. These outings might be by boat, on foot or by safari vehicle, each offering a different perspective of the Pantanal. Excursions typically focus on spotting wildlife such as giant anteaters, caimans, capybaras, monkeys and a wide variety of bird species. Sunrise and sunset are especially productive times to be out in the field, with beautiful light and a higher chance of animal encounters.
Staying at   Pousada Piuval
After breakfast, you'll be driven from your lodge in the Pantanal to Chapada dos Guimarães, a journey of approximately three hours, with time to stop and spot wildlife along the way. The vast Parque Nacional Chapada dos Guimarães is located in the tablelands that mark the western edge of the Brazilian central plateau. The area is known for its waterfalls and characteristic mountains and canyons with a diverse ecosystem, making it ideal for birdwatchers and other nature lovers.

Today is a full day based in Chapada dos Guimarães, amongst its dramatic scenery, with the chance to encounter the unique wildlife of the Brazilian Cerrado. The landscape of rolling plateaus, red sandstone cliffs and sweeping valleys is dotted with waterfalls, and a day here usually begins with a walk along trails that lead to spectacular viewpoints.

Options include the famous Veu de Noiva (Bridal Veil) waterfall, which plunges more than 80 metres into a lush canyon. The lookout points offer vast panoramas of the surrounding savannah and, on clear days, views stretching all the way toward the Pantanal.

Wildlife is never far away, so keep an eye out for colourful macaws and toucans flying overhead, as well as capuchin monkeys, armadillos and even the elusive maned wolf in the distance. The park is particularly a paradise for birdwatchers, with hundreds of species thriving in the varied habitats.

Staying at   Pousada do Parque
Today, travel from Chapada do Guimarães to the Southern Brazilian Amazon. The drive takes around six hours through the heart of Mato Grosso’s ever-changing landscapes, and there's a stop for lunch at Nobres around the midway point. Leaving the open savannas behind, head into greener, denser terrain on a long but rewarding drive that showcases the region’s scale and diversity. As you approach the Amazon lodge, the scenery transforms dramatically as vast grasslands give way to lush rainforest, setting the perfect stage for your Amazon adventure.
The following two full days are based at your lodge in the Southern Brazilian Amazon to immerse yourself in a rare meeting point of the Amazon and Cerrado, where wildlife thrives in remarkable diversity. Guided walks and boat rides take you deep into pristine forest and along crystal-clear lakes, where you might spot colourful toucans, manakins, barbets and even the critically endangered cone-billed tanager. This is also a haven for other birdlife, from puffbirds and nunlets to eagles and tanagers, as well as mammals such as capybaras, crab-eating foxes, tapirs and playful monkeys. As evening falls, the forest comes to life with the calls of pygmy-owls and, if you’re lucky, the deep gaze of a spectacled owl.
There may be a time for a last excursion this morning before you begin your road journey back towards Cuiaba (approximately 4-5 hours). There's the option to stop for lunch on the way, before you take your late-afternoon flight towards São Paulo and then transit onto your international flights back to the UK, which travel overnight, arriving back the following day.
