Get a deeper understanding of conservation in action, paired with thoughtful wildlife encounters and time in lesser-visited corners of East Africa on this eight-night behind-the-scenes tour.

This is a private, tailor-made journey, travelling at your own pace with a dedicated driver-guide whose local knowledge shapes each day. Begin in Rwanda’s Akagera National Park, where savannah, woodland and wetlands support a wide range of wildlife. Here, park staff share firsthand insight into the work African Parks is doing to restore ecosystems and protect species.

Game drives and a boat trip on Lake Ihema give you time to absorb the landscape, while two nights at Karenge Bush Camp place you right in the heart of the park. A guided ‘Walk the Line’ patrol brings conservation to life, as rangers explain anti-poaching strategies, wildlife monitoring and how communities and animals are supported to coexist.

From Akagera, you travel north in your private four-wheel-drive vehicle, crossing into Uganda for an overnight stay near Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Time here is spent on foot and on the water: tracking golden monkeys, walking the Kisozi Caldera, paddling on Lake Mutanda and taking part in a Batwa settlement walk that encourages open conversation through an interpreter.

Your journey continues to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, where you stay at Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge. One gorilla permit is included, allowing you time with a habituated mountain gorilla family. You may also choose a second trek or a challenging hike through the surrounding highlands before returning to Kigali for your flight home.

This tour suits travellers who value conservation, cultural understanding and carefully considered travel, with every detail handled for you from start to finish.

Itinerary

Take the early morning KLM flight from London Heathrow (or selected other UK airports) via Amsterdam to Kigali, Rwanda, where you'll arrive in the evening.

On arrival, you'll be welcomed by your experienced, professional, English-speaking driver-guide and transferred to the Heaven Boutique Hotel for an overnight stay.

Depart after breakfast to the southern sector of Akagera National Park, where you'll be given a fascinating 'Behind the Scenes' talk by one of the rangers. Learn about Akagera's history; this includes the wildlife relocation programmes (including black rhinos and African lions) and the management takeover by African Parks, which has done exemplary work in terms of turning this park (Rwanda's only 'Big Five' protected area) into the success story that it is.

Take a boat trip in the afternoon on the scenic Lake Ihema, where birdlife, hippos and crocodiles are prolific.

Tonight, you'll stay in the widely-appreciated Ruzizi Tented Lodge, with all meals included.

Breakfast is followed by a full-day game drive northwards to Karenga Bush Camp, now open most of the year except April and November (the rainy season).

During the drive, you should see plenty of game - notably African elephant, Cape buffalo, giraffe and plenty of antelopes, including sable, roan, oribi, bushbuck, reedbuck and topi. Enjoy panoramic vistas from the top of the mountain across Lake Ihema and further southwards out to Tanzania.

Stay for two nights at Karenge Bush Camp, with all meals included.

You may see an elusive African leopard while out on a game drive this morning. In the afternoon, a ranger will take you on a 'Walk the Line' excursion. During this seven-kilometre walk, you'll head into the hills following the fence along the outside of the park. Learn about how park staff safeguard wildlife and what measures are in place to mitigate human-wildlife conflict.

From the top of the ridge where you walk to, you'll enjoy superb views over the national park. Overnight in Karenge Bush Camp, with all meals included.

Staying at   Karenge Bush Camp

Depart after breakfast to the Rwanda/Uganda border, from where you'll head up to the scenically spectacular Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.

This afternoon, you'll be taken on an authentic experience to meet the resident Batwa community. With a mediator between the lodge management and the Batwa community and a translator, you're invited to have a dialogue with the Batwa, which can be a very moving experience. The experience isn't staged - you can often expect very direct answers to challenging questions.

Enjoy an overnight stay in the very comfortable Mount Gahinga Lodge, with all meals included.

After breakfast, set off to visit the rare golden monkeys, which enjoy bamboo groves in their rainforest habitat. Then travel to the Kisozi Caldera for a walk. Afterwards, take a short canoe trip on picture-postcard-perfect Lake Mutanda. Drive on to Nkuringo in the southern sector of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park.

Stay for three nights at the comfortable and very well-run Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge, with all meals included.

After an early breakfast, you'll be taken to the park office for your briefing on conduct during gorilla tracking.

Set off with scouts and porters to seek one of the resident, habituated family groups of mountain gorillas. Your golden hour with these remarkable primates is something you'll cherish for the rest of your life - something with which very few wildlife experiences can compare.

You have three wonderful alternatives to choose from today:

First, you could do a second gorilla trek (please let us know as long in advance as is possible if you select this option, because oftentimes gorilla permit availability is outweighed by demand).

Alternatively, you could do the four-hour 'Gorilla Habituation Experience' (price of a permit for this activity is US$1,500).

Lastly, there's an option to make the very scenic 'Top of the World' rainforest walk in the Nkuringo sector of Bwindi. During this walk, you can take in more spellbinding scenery and seek abundant birds and small rainforest wildlife.

Depart Bwindi this morning to scenic Lake Mutanda, where you'll enjoy an early lunch at the scenically appointed Chameleon Hill Lodge. You'll then be transferred over the Uganda/Rwanda border and south to Kigali Airport in time to check in for the KLM flight departing tonight to London Heathrow (or selected other UK airports) via Amsterdam.

On your early morning arrival into Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, connect with the KLM flight back to London Heathrow (or selected other UK airports). You'll be home by mid-morning the next day after a wonderful holiday.
