This itinerary has been designed for beginner birders, who also enjoy mammals and other aspects of natural history. Most birders planning on visiting Kenya will be aware that the country has a longer checklist (about 1,100 species) than any other African country. This is thanks to an incredibly diverse spectrum of habitats, from great lakes and semi-desert expanses, to lush evergreen forests; snow-capped mountains and undulating grasslands.

The locations you'll explore during this trip have been chosen because they have a reputation for harbouring abundant birdlife as well as for offering gratifying mammal-watching opportunities, so they're suited for experienced birders and keen novices alike. One of the many magical occasions you'd be able to savour is spending time with your experienced guide observing the huge concentrations of aquatic birds from a boat on Lake Naivasha. And then there are the diverse avian communities of the savannah, woodland and grassland habitats which you'll have the chance to investigate.

Of course there will also be plenty to see for mammal watchers: a stay of three glorious nights at a comfortable tented safari camp in the Masai Mara means you'll be enjoying game drives (with emphasis on birds, of course) and exploring the savannah and undulating plains with experienced, knowledgeable and personable bush guides.

Please note: for serious birders, we're always happy to tailor specialist itineraries incorporating the better-known localities appreciated by the international birding fraternity, such as Arabuko-Sokoke Forest near Malindi; the Taita Hills and of course, the Kakamega Forest in the western part of the country.

Itinerary

Take an overnight flight to Nairobi.
On arrival today you will be met and transferred to the domestic airport, where you'll take a scenic light aircraft flight to reach Loldia House for the start of your birdwatching experience. Here you will spend the next 3 nights with all meals and safari activities included. Set on a 6,500 acre farm, Loldia House offers a range of wildlife and birding activities on the shores of Lake Naivasha.
Armed with your bins, head for the Lake Nakuru, at one of Kenya's smallest national parks. Enjoy the wonderful spectacle created by the Greater and Lesser flamingos lining the lake shores, along with various other aquatic birds. In the bush and grassy habitat along the shore, there's also an abundance of avian life awaiting discovery. In terms of mammals, you may see some White rhino.
Staying at   Loldia House
Today you can choose to discover the birdlife by foot, by boat, and on game drive with the resident birder - there's plenty awaiting keen twitchers heading out this way.
Staying at   Loldia House
Today you will be transferred to the airstrip for your light aircraft flight to Governors' Camp in Masai Mara where you will spend the next 3 nights with all meals and activities included. Just as the Mara is absolutely heaving with wildlife, it is alive with prolific birdlife - you'll not leave disappointed.
Experience exceptional game viewing, in some of the best designed vehicles and with highly experienced guides in the magnificent Masai Mara National Reserve. Immersed in the breathtaking scenery, your days spent in the Mara offer some first-class wildlife and landscape photographic experiences. For the more adventurous, hot air balloons are a safari experience unlike any other, offering unparalleled sweeping views and a bird's eye perspective. A Masai cultural village that accepts visitors sits just outside of the reserve, giving insight to travellers interested in understanding a way of life unchanged for centuries.
Staying at   Governors' Camp
Your final day in the Masai Mara. Governors' Camp has a variety of activities on offer with their knowledgeable guides, but don't forget their various initiatives that are ongoing. Ask for more information on what Governors' Camps are doing to support their communities and conservation projects.
Today you will be transferred to the airstrip for your internal flight back to Nairobi Wilson Airport, where you'll be met and taken to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to check in for your flight home. Time allowing, you'll be taken to a hotel where you have the use of a day room, and where you can freshen up and have a meal (cost of meal for own account).
