Located in the Otavalo Region just two hours north of the capital Quito, Hacienda Zuleta is an authentic working family run farm that also operates as a high-quality lodge. Originally owned by former president Galo Plaza Lasso for over a hundred years and still run by his descendants today, the hacienda has a stunning setting in the Ecuadorian highlands and provides the perfect base to explore the region and relax around the fabulous gardens, and inviting living and reading spaces. There are 21 tastefully decorated bedrooms, each with their own fireplace and a cosy, yet luxurious feel. The farm produces a wealth of organic foods, from artichokes and quinoa to dairy and meats, and guests can enjoy home cooked meals lovingly prepared by the family during their stay. There is also a ‘Cheese House’, which showcases Zuleta's on-site cheese factory, offering a hands-on tour and tastings of award-winning cheeses. There are a great variety of other activities available at Zuleta, with horseback riding on offer for all levels, and extensive mountain trails for trekking and mountain biking, whilst spectacle bears can also be spotted in the surrounding hills. Guests are also invited to visit the Andean Condor rehabilitation centre, as well as various education and conservation projects around the area. The property enables guests to experience authentic hacienda life and interact with the local community, whom the family work closely with whilst experiencing high-end hospitality and service.
