Perched on the shores of Lake Kariba within Zimbabwe’s Matusadona National Park, Fothergill Island is a magical sanctuary where rich African traditions and contemporary safari luxury collide.

Reopened in 2021 after an extensive refurbishment, the island’s two camps feature beautifully designed tented suites in soft, uplifting tones, blending with the surrounding mopani forest, serene lake and sweeping floodplains.

The atmosphere is light, airy and tranquil—perfect if you’re a wildlife enthusiast seeking a peaceful retreat that’s also packed with adventure. From guided walking safaris and game drives to fly fishing and boat excursions, every activity offers a front-row seat to the region’s extraordinary biodiversity.

Sustainable by design, 95% of the island’s energy comes from solar power, and the team is committed to conservation and community initiatives. At Fothergill, your safari is crafted to be yours—both responsible and memorable.

Accommodation

Fothergill Island comprises two linked camps set amid lawns, bush and lake views. There are ten bright, breezy suites: five Lake Suites, two Family Suites and three Island Suites, each uniquely decorated in natural hues with vibrant African accents. Lake Suites offer private decks, plunge pools and hanging daybeds, while Family Suites provide interleading bedrooms for shared moments. Island Suites share a living and dining area with a pool. All accommodations provide easy access to the surrounding wildlife, with swimming pools, alfresco decks and shaded lounges for relaxation.

Cuisine

Dining at Fothergill is a highlight of every stay. Fresh and flavourful, each meal reflects the exceptional pride of the team of chefs and is a celebration of the safari. Enjoy locally sourced ingredients and Zimbabwean-inspired flavours, with each bite leaving an impression on your senses.

Activities

Fothergill Island offers a wealth of ways to explore Matusadona National Park and Lake Kariba. Guided game drives and walking safaris bring you face-to-face with elephants, hippos and abundant birdlife, while boating safaris reveal the hidden beauty of Sanyati Gorge. If you love fishing, you can try your hand at catching and releasing tiger fish, vundu and tilapia. Or how about practising some archery for a fun, hands-on way to connect with the wilderness? Alternatively, take a cultural tour to Kariba City and uncover the history of the dam and the resident communities.
