Silently planted on the powdery shore of Zanzibar’s north-east coast, the adults-only Matemwe Attitude retreat ticks by unnoticed, living a life of its own overlooking luminous, coral-filled waters.
Approximately 74 private villas sit between 80,000 m² of golden sands and tropical vegetation. With views towards Mnemba Island, this is a peaceful choice for couples, friends or solo travellers looking to slow the pace right down and spend time by the sea. Its design draws on traditional Swahili culture, with carved wood, natural materials and makuti roofs giving the villas and shared spaces a strong sense of place. Everything is set up to help you reconnect with yourself, whether you want to snorkel with marine creatures of all shapes and sizes or learn the art of the kanga during a workshop.
Accommodation
Choose one of 74 spacious villas. They’re spread across five categories, all designed for two adults with a 180×200cm bed. One option is the Swim-Up Villa, featuring direct access to a shared infinity pool. Alternatively, the Deluxe Villa enjoys sublime tropical canopy views, while the Beach Retreat Villa boasts panoramic lagoon views and your own beach spot. Seafront Villas face the turquoise lagoon and include an outdoor shower, whereas the Deluxe Villa with Partial Seaview offers a private pool and glimpses of the sea. Each is made with natural materials and generous outdoor spaces.
Dining
Chakula Chakula: The main hub for relaxed dining is a buffet restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, with dishes inspired by flavours from around the world alongside Zanzibari specialities.
Upepo: Between the pool and ocean, Upepo is a laid-back spot for cocktails, tea, coffee and gourmet snacks. Drop by at any time of day for a drink or something light to eat.
Fukwe: Savour pizzas, mishikaki and other casual favourites right on the beach at Fukwe. It’s a great place to settle in for an easy-going lunch or dinner with the sand and sea close by.
Karibu Lounge: A calm space where you can enjoy a complimentary drink on arrival. Regular tea and coffee tastings are part of the daily activity programme at Karibu Lounge.
Dine Around: If you’re staying on half-board, this option gives you more choice at dinner without an additional charge. Tuck into the buffet at Chakula Chakula, à la carte dining at Fukwe and more.
Activities
From beach fitness, yoga and tai chi to guided coastal walks with a marine eco guide, there’s plenty to do during your stay. You can arrange snorkelling, scuba diving and dhow excursions with certified local partners. Plus, the Marine Discovery Centre explores Zanzibar’s mangroves and coral reefs, while ‘Like a Local’ activities include Swahili cooking and palm-leaf weaving. Evenings are energetic with live music, Ngoma drumming and dance, DJ sets, outdoor cinema and stargazing. There’s also Spa POZ, its treatments using natural ingredients made from sustainably harvested plants.
