"Ethiopia offers a very different wildlife experience: it is home to some of the world's rarest and most endangered mammals such as the Ethiopian wolf, Walia ibex and Swayne's hartebeest, all of which number only some 500 individuals. Other endemic mammals include the unmistakeable Gelada monkey and localized Bale monkey."

Things To Do In Ethiopia

  • Follow the traditional Historical Route to see castles, stelae and rock-hewn churches: the attractions of Lalibela, Gondar, Bahir Dar and Axum are world class - absolutely spectacular! Ethiopian Airlines' excellent domestic flight network and service means that the circuit can be done from the more recently dated attractions such as those at Gondar and Bahir Dar, to the oldest, in Axum and Yeha - or, the other way around.
  • See the gravely endangered Ethiopian wolves and other endemic mammals such as the endangered Walia ibex in magnificent Bale and Simien Mountains National Parks. Add to this an absolute birding bonanza, with Ethiopia holding one of the highest concentrations of endemic species of any African country.
  • Visit the fascinating people of the Omo Region on very sensitively arranged, fully guided tours. (We will only take our guests to communities who have had regular contact with foreigners and who welcome visitors to their villages).
  • Experience Timket, Ethiopia's biggest festival, or the next most important one in the annual calendar, Meskel.
  • Enjoy the world's best coffee - after all, Kaffa in Ethiopia is where coffee was discovered!
  • Go hiking or trekking in the Bale and Simien Mountain National Parks, or enjoy community village walks with well-managed home stays in Tigray or Wollo/Lalibela regions.
  • Marvel at the otherworldy scenery of the Danakil Depression, one of the hottest places on Earth and one of the lowest areas on the continent.
