Kuala Lumpur – Kuching
Fly from Kuala Lumpur to Kuching. Tonight you will stay at the Pullman Kuching hotel before continuing your journey into Borneo.
Kuching – Batang Ai
Start your journey towards Batang Ai from Kuching by road. The journey is extremely beautiful, and you’ll pass through landscapes of paddy fields, pepper plantations and picturesque villages. The country vistas soon turn to jungle as you drive further into the fertile centre of Borneo.
Enjoy lunch at the town of Lachau, before catching the shuttle ferry from Lubok Antu’s Hydro Lake to transfer to your resort.
Enjoy breakfast at the hotel before journeying across the Batang Ai Lake onto the Engkari River. After a scenic cruise you will reach the Mengkak Longhouse. Here you will learn about the traditional local way of life both in the Longhouse and at the adjacent fishing farm before enjoying a traditional lunch.
After lunch you have the afternoon free to explore the local area before relaxing at the hotel.
Batang Ai – Kuching
Retrace your steps as you return to Kuching, admiring the jungle and countryside scenery as you pass. Borneo’s wild countryside is full of wildlife, from hundreds of different varieties of plants to animals from Proboscis monkeys and orangutans to the Lowland tree frog and the Spiny terrapin.
Kuching – Sandakan
Catch your flight to Sandakan from Kuching Airport. You have the rest of the day free to explore Sandakan and its beautiful seaside setting. Sandakan is known as the gateway to many of Borneo’s most rewarding wildlife adventures. The Kinabatangan River meanders through forest, lakes, caves and swamps on its way through Sandakan.
Sepilok and Abai Jungle Lodge
This morning make the 30-minute drive to the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre. At 10am you can watch the young orangutans’ feeding time from a special viewing platform. The centre works to rescue and rehabilitate these magnificent primates in their natural environment.
Cruise on the Kinabatangan River to get to the Abai Jungle Lodge and Restaurant, reachable only by boat. After lunch at the restaurant, explore the dense jungle forest around the lodge, and stroll the wooden boardwalk to get a great view of the local wildlife, including orangutan, birds and countless other species.
Pitas Oxbow Lake & Menanggul River
This morning take an early river cruise to the Pitas Oxbow Lake. This area is particularly rich in wildlife, and during your visit here you could be lucky enough to catch sight of a Bornean pygmy elephant family, Proboscis or Silvery lutung monkeys or crocodiles idling in the waters.
This afternoon you can take another cruise along the Menanggul River, another opportunity to observe the Bornean rainforest, full of wildlife including the Oriental pied hornbill and macaques.
Santakan – Kota Kinabalu
This morning return to the centre of Sandakan. Explore the busy city, stopping at the Central Market to browse for souvenirs.
This afternoon, catch your flight to Kota Kinabalu. Check into Shangri La’s Tanjung Aru Resort & Spa, where you can rest and enjoy some well-earned relaxation!
Today enjoy the facilities at the hotel or explore the local area. Kinabalu National Park is home to Mount Kinabalu and a variety of resident wildlife including Bearded pigs, orangutans and a plethora of butterflies, while from the resort you can also take a trip to nearby coral islands for some fantastic views.
Kota Kinabalu – Kuala Lumpur
Transfer to Kota Kinabalu airport for your homebound flights, via Kuala Lumpur airport.
