This Kenya safari and Zanzibar beach trip is ideal if you're looking for an East Africa adventure that blends untamed wilderness, rich culture and barefoot island tranquillity—all with a light footprint.
Over 12 nights, you’ll explore two contrasting wildlife habitats in Kenya before discovering the spice-scented streets of Zanzibar and winding down on the idyllic Chumbe Island.
Your safari begins in the remote Selenkay Conservancy in Amboseli, where elephants roam freely and the Maasai guides’ deep connection to the land enriches every game drive. Staying at Porini Amboseli Camp, you’ll experience an exclusive take on the ecosystem – quieter, wilder and magical.
Next, you’ll head to the vast plains of the Masai Mara. Based at Porini Mara Camp in the heart of Ol Kinyei Conservancy, you’ll enjoy exceptional wildlife sightings in one of Africa’s most iconic settings. Think cheetahs on the hunt, lions lazing in the grass and wildebeest herds stretching to the horizon.
From the bush, you’ll fly to Zanzibar for a change of pace in Stone Town, followed by three nights at Chumbe Island Lodge – a pioneering eco-retreat where sustainability and serenity go hand in hand. Snorkel the coral reef, wander forest trails with guides or soak up the island’s natural beauty.
Whether you're a first-timer or returning for a deeper experience, this itinerary promises something truly special: expert-led wildlife encounters, genuine cultural connection and time to rest and reflect.

Itinerary
Day 2 | Nairobi to Selenkay Conservancy
On arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport early this morning, you'll be welcomed and transferred in a comfortable four-wheel drive vehicle to the Selenkay Conservation Area.
Arrive at Porini Camp before lunch and check in for your two-night stay, with all meals, game activities and park fees included.
Selenkay Conservancy is located ten miles north of the boundary of Amboseli National Park, with which it shares the same ecosystem/habitat types. Selenkay covers 14,000 acres of land within the nearly 200,000-acre Eselenkei Group Ranch, leased from the local Maasai by Gamewatchers Safaris. The project aims to protect the original habitats and to encourage wildlife conservation as a means for the resident communities to earn a living, instead of farming.
Porini Amboseli Camp, deep in the heart of Selenkay Conservancy, is part of the Porini group of camps set up by Gamewatchers Safaris in some of the conservancies in Kenya, which Gamewatchers were instrumental in establishing. The camp’s remote location off the main tourist trail means that the wildlife sees less vehicle traffic and therefore behaves more naturally. What's very appealing is that the camp accommodates only 18 guests at a time. So, you can benefit from the knowledge and experience of the Maasai employed as game rangers, trackers and camp staff.
Day 3 | Selenkay Conservancy & Amboseli National Park
Enjoy your safari in the Selenkay Conservation Area and Amboseli National Park.
Migrating species from Amboseli that had previously been killed or driven off land which was set aside for farming have been encouraged to find sanctuary in the conservancy. Recent years have witnessed a marvellous increase in wildlife numbers, with African elephants returning after a 20-year absence. Expect to see African lions, cheetahs, leopards, bat-eared foxes, mongooses and porcupines at night. There are giraffes, Thomson's and Grant’s gazelles, lesser kudu, gerenuk and many more interesting mammals.
Birdlife is prolific, particularly in the marshy and swampy areas. Over 420 species have been counted within the region as a whole, including six species of vulture.
Day 4 | Selenkay Conservancy to Masai Mara
After an early morning game drive and brunch, travel overland to Nairobi in time for lunch (to own account). You'll be taken to Wilson Airport for the afternoon flight to the Masai Mara, where you'll be welcomed on arrival by your guide for a game drive transfer across the plains to Porini Mara Camp in the Ol Kinyei Conservancy.
Stay for three nights at the lovely Porini Mara Camp, with all meals, game activities and park fees included.
Shortly afterwards, set off on a late afternoon game drive till sunset.
Day 5 | Masai Mara to Ol Kinyei Conservancy
Porini Mara Camp is a non-seasonal safari camp set in Ol Kinyei Conservancy – an 18,700-acre wilderness set aside as a wildlife sanctuary with a wide variety of species, including big cats. The area has open plains, forests, rivers and phenomenal views. This setting provides the ultimate African safari adventure in an unspoilt area, away from the crowds.
Safari game drives can also be taken in the nearby Masai Mara National Reserve and the adjacent Naboisho Conservancy.
Day 6 | Masai Mara
Enjoy more safari activities today in Ol Kinyei and/or the Mara National Reserve.
Kenya’s game reserves also host the Wildebeest Migration from the Loita Plains to the Mara, which moves into Ol Kinyei Conservancy earlier, usually by January. Calving takes place there during February and March when the plains of the conservancy are teeming with blue wildebeest. This is before they move through the Naboisho Conservancy and into the Olare Motorogi Conservancy.
The wildebeest are not the only tenants of the land. Mara is also home to zebras, elephants, big cats like cheetahs, lions and leopards. Cape buffalo, eland, topi, impala, gazelle, warthog and spotted hyena add to the huge diversity of wildlife present.
Day 7 | Masai Mara to Nairobi & Zanzibar
After lunch, transfer to the airstrip for your afternoon flight to Nairobi Wilson Airport, which arrives just after midday. Connect onto the early evening flight to Zanzibar.
Transfer upon arrival into Stone Town for a two-night stay at Zanzibar Palace Hotel, with breakfast included.
Day 8 | Stone Town, Zanzibar
Today, you can relax or go sightseeing around Zanzibar.
We highly recommend a trip to Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park, where you can see the endangered Zanzibar colobus (the park's flagship species). There are also plenty of other interesting species about, including many birds and colourful butterflies which can be seen while completing the forest walk, as well as a peek into the mangroves. Do let us know if you're keen to visit Jozani, and we'll add it to your tour price with pleasure.
Day 9 | Stone Town to Mbweni Ruins & Chumbe Island
After breakfast, you'll be transferred to Mbweni Ruins for the short boat transfer to Chumbe Island.
Stay for three nights in an eco-bungalow at Chumbe Island Lodge, including all meals, soft drinks, guided nature walks and snorkelling.
Day 10 | Chumbe Island, Zanzibar
