Dating back to the early 20th century, Roça Sundy was once at the heart of one of Príncipe’s largest cacao plantations. Today, the former plantation house has been thoughtfully restored using many recycled and locally sourced materials, retaining much of its original character while offering comfortable contemporary accommodation.
The property is divided between two buildings: Eclipse House, with six rooms, and Cacao House, with nine. Rooms are simple, stylish and well maintained, with air conditioning, minibar, safe and satellite television. Surrounded by dense tropical forest, the property feels immersed in nature, while the panoramic rooms in Eclipse House enjoy distant sea views.
At the centre of the property is a beautifully preserved veranda with sweeping views — a memorable setting for sunset drinks and dinners prepared using fresh local and organic ingredients.
Roça Sundy has a strong community focus, with most staff recruited locally from Príncipe. The atmosphere is warm, informal and genuinely connected to island life, offering guests an experience that feels both authentic and personal. A little Portuguese can be helpful, although the team is always welcoming and eager to assist.
The property lies around 15km from Príncipe airport along a rough island track, adding to its remote appeal. Sundy Praia’s beach is approximately a 30- minute walk away, and transfers can also be arranged.
Activities available from the property include guided hikes, birdwatching, cookery experiences, yoga and massages, as well as island excursions led by knowledgeable local guides.
Roça Sundy is particularly rewarding for nature lovers. The surrounding forest comes alive in the late afternoon with birdsong, while sunsets are often accompanied by sightings of African grey parrots, Príncipe starlings, São Tomé green pigeons and other endemic birdlife returning to roost.
Rates include half-board accommodation and one shared island experience per day.
