Experience Highlights

  • Duration: 3

You will be transferred to the campsite and research station in Kirindy Forest during the late afternoon, when sightings of Fossa are at their best.

Your guide will meet you and with your driver, set off after dusk on a quick drive to the trailhead, where vehicles are parked.  From there, embark on the guided night stroll with your guide. Chances are you won't be alone as this excursion is now very popular.

As terrain is flat and sandy, grading of the walks is easy.

You may lucky enough to see the smallest of all primates, Madame Berthe’s mouse lemur, an Endangered inhabitant of Kirindy and Marofandilia Forests and usually on the wish lists of those visiting the Menabe region. However it has become increasingly scarce. More often seen among the resident nocturnal lemurs are Red-tailed Sportive lemur, the very vociferous Pale fork-marked lemur, Fat-tailed dwarf  lemur (in summer only), Coquerel's giant mouse lemur and the very common Gray mouse lemur.

It is also possible to see the endangered Giant jumping rat, an endearing, hare-sized rodent which is found only there. To do this, we recommend you stay at the simple restaurant at the central campsite after your night walk with your guides, enjoy a drink there and wait until approximately 10pm which is when these rarities tend to appear.
