Experience Highlights

  • Duration: Half-day (flexible)
  • Type: Group Experience

There are a few variations of the Ankarana walk, depending on how long you want to stay out in the park for. An easy morning’s walk along mostly flat and gentle terrain, takes you to the ‘tsingy rary’ formations, where there is a viewing platform over which you can see a vast section of tsingy formations. Along the way, there is an area with an impressive number of Baobabs, of the large northern species Adansonia madagascariensis.

During the walk you can also visit the strange natural sink-hole, Pert de Rivier. Birding and wildlife viewing is generally good along this trail, with star attractions including Sanford’s and Crowned lemurs; Madagascar green pigeon and Crested coua. In the afternoon, energetic visitors can make the walk to Bat Cave and explore some beautiful deciduous forest around Prince’s Campsite.

If staying at Ankarana Lodge, which is better located, we recommend a night stroll in the grounds, for nocturnal wildlife.  If staying at Iharana Bush Camp, getting to Ankarana Est entails a 90 minute drive around the southern part of the Ankarana massif.
