Sitting on a 10,000-acre conservancy within Laikipia, Tumaren is a fixed campsite offering seven spacious sleeping tents for an intimate and personal Kenya wildlife holiday.
In the Maa language, Tumaren Camp can mean “dragonfly” (which the camp is named after) as well as “light morning rain” (which sometimes happens in the area and can be considered good luck). You’re made to feel at home the moment you arrive. The interiors reflect that of Laikipia’s rich ecology and natural history, immersing you before even setting off on a guided walk or camel ride.
Operated by Karisia Walking Safaris, the camp is your humble base for exploring the local wilderness. Paired with your experienced Laikipia Masai and Samburu guides, who are all residents of the area, you’re able to partake in an array of activities – all bespoke to match your interests during your stay. Enjoy seeking out predators like cheetah or lion or go birdwatching for species like Heuglin’s courser.
Accommodation
You have access to one of seven large en suite safari tents with verandahs. Each has a private entrance, double beds, solar lighting with flush toilets and hot running water with the option to add another bed, including a baby cot. Four tents have dividers for extra privacy. These tents are ideal if you’re travelling as a family or in a group of friends, providing plenty of space for you all to enjoy.
Wildlife
A walking safari could reveal a range of large mammals, some of Kenya’s most unusual birds and potentially the many reptile and amphibian species on any given day. Some of these mammals include Thompson’s gazelle, hippo, lion, leopard, wild dogs, elephant and striped or spotted hyena.
You also have a chance to observe birds such as Von der Decken's hornbill, eastern chanting goshawk and bateleur eagle in addition to reptiles like red-headed agama and amphibians like Garman’s toad.
