Are you curious about wild places, coastal ecosystems and the stories that tie people and nature together? Then this ten-night Canadian adventure is perfect for you, offering time to explore its unique wildlife subspecies, indigenous culture and history, and ancient scenery across the Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve, National Marine Protected Area and Haida Heritage Site.

You’ll settle into Canadian life with three nights in Vancouver, one of the country’s most engaging cities. Framed by mountains and ocean, it offers an easy introduction to the region’s coastal culture, with guided and independent time to take in the neighbourhoods, waterfronts and local food.

From here, travel north to begin your eight-night small-ship sailing expedition across Haida Gwaii, a remote archipelago off British Columbia’s northwest coast, often described as “the Galapagos of the north”! Days are shaped by the weather and wildlife, travelling by expedition vessel to reach places inaccessible by road and moving between forested inlets, open shoreline and rich marine waters.

Exploration happens by skiff, kayak and on foot. Walk beneath towering, moss-laden trees, land on remote beaches and spend time watching the sea for life below and above the surface. Puffins, albatrosses, jellyfish, sunfish, killer whales and humpback whales are all part of the living tapestry.

Cultural understanding is central to your experience, too. At SG_ang Gwaay, a Haida Heritage Site and UNESCO World Heritage Site, you’ll get to see longhouse depressions and mortuary poles that speak to thousands of years of Haida stewardship. Plus, throughout Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve and National Marine Conservation Area Reserve, the Haida Watchmen will share invaluable insights with you that bring depth and context to every landing.

This is a journey that rewards patience, curiosity and respect for place, offering a rare chance to connect closely with both nature and culture in one of Canada’s least-visited regions.

Itinerary

Fly from the UK to Vancouver. On arrival, make your way to your hotel, where you’ll be staying for the next three nights. The remainder of the day is free, allowing you time to rest after your flight.
Vancouver
Spend the next two days in Vancouver, taking in its vibrant neighbourhoods and scenic surroundings. You could stroll along the waterfront, cycle through Stanley Park or explore the markets and galleries of Granville Island. There’s also time to visit cultural highlights such as the Museum of Anthropology or the Vancouver Art Gallery. Evenings are free for you to enjoy at your own pace.
Tanu
Fly northwest from Vancouver to Sandspit on Moresby Island, Haida Gwaii. After arrival, transfer to Moresby Camp and board the expedition vessel Ocean Wayfinder. Set sail for the ancient Haida village of K’uuna Llnagaay, where Haida Watchmen share the history of the site and the meaning behind its intricately carved mortuary and memorial poles. Continue south to Taanuu Llnagaay, exploring the house depressions and learning how villages once gathered here. Travel by skiff or on foot along the coast, taking in the moss-draped forests, beaches and wildlife along the way.
Cape St. James
Sailing south through Haida Gwaii, explore the pelagic waters, where seabirds, sharks, giant ocean sunfish, Pacific white-sided dolphins and humpback whales are often seen. Visit K_’iid Xyangs K_’iidaay, a marine biodiversity hotspot where you can kayak or ride in an inflatable skiff, discovering giant sunflower stars, multicoloured bat stars, moon snails, decorator crabs and nudibranchs. Weather permitting, continue to Cape St. James, the archipelago’s southernmost point, where converging currents attract abundant wildlife. Watch for tufted and horned puffins, sea lions and killer whales.
SG̱ang Gwaay
Visit SG_ang Gwaay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and often regarded as Haida Gwaii’s jewel. You’ll walk among the remains of massive longhouses and admire the mortuary and memorial poles that still stand, reflecting centuries of Haida culture. Explore nearby beaches, tide pools and the dramatic vistas of the Gordon Islands. Days are spent hiking through moss-laden coastal rainforests, navigating river estuaries and discovering intertidal zones. Look for remnants of thousand-year-old wooden-stake fish traps and observe how salmon, bears, forests and people are interconnected.
Hlk’yah GawGa (Windy Bay)

Sail to Hlk’yah GaawGa (Windy Bay) and explore old-growth forests of towering cedar and spruce, central to Gwaii Haanas’ creation. A Haida Watchman shares the story of Gwaii Haanas through the Legacy Pole, providing cultural insight into the landscape. Spend the afternoon on a sail, watching for killer whales. On the final evening, gather to share highlights and reflect on your journey.

The next day, disembark and transfer to Sandspit for your return flight to the UK.
