This 14-night Panama adventure is an engaging route through the country’s impressive landscapes, incorporating well-known highlights and quieter corners that few travellers reach.

It’s well-suited if you’re curious about wildlife, enjoy time outdoors and like an itinerary that balances city discovery with peaceful days in forests, highlands and along the coast.

You’ll begin in Panama City, a place where historic districts sit beside modern towers. Then visit Miraflores Locks to understand the stories behind the canal, before heading into Soberania National Park with a naturalist who helps you tune in to the calls and movements of the thriving birdlife.

From here, travel to El Valle de Antón. Rugged slopes, cloud forest trails and open countryside make this a rewarding area to explore on foot or by bike, with plenty of time to move at your own pace.

Your journey continues north to Santa Catalina, a peaceful stretch of coast once known mainly for its fishing community. Today, it draws people who value gentle surfing and nature at close quarters. A full day is set aside for Coiba National Park, where you explore both on land and in the water. Head into the highlands around Boquete, framed by volcanoes and rich, green mountains. This coffee-growing region offers superb birding and walking, and your time here includes a dawn jeep trip up Baru Volcano, as well as a guided walk to a tucked-away waterfall in prime quetzal habitat.

The trip ends in Boca Chica, a relaxed coastal area looking out towards the Gulf of Chiriquí National Park. A boat trip takes you across to nearby islands for quiet beaches, snorkelling and an easy finale.

Itinerary

Today, fly on your chosen flights from the UK to Panama City. Upon arrival, you're met by one of our local representatives and taken to your hotel, where you'll spend the next three nights in the historic Casco Viejo district. From this attractive part of the city, enjoy the views over the water to Panama City’s towering, modern skyline.
Today begins at the Panama Canal, a magnificent feat of engineering. See up close the workings of the canal at Miraflores Lock and learn about its fascinating history, from Balboa’s vision in the 16th century to its long construction and inauguration in 1914. Later, visit the Museum of Biodiversity and Ancón Hill (the highest point in the city), before heading to the Amador Causeway for dramatic vistas over skyscrapers on one side and the historic centre and gulf on the other.
Soberania National Park
Just outside Panama City is Soberania National Park and a renowned birding destination: The Pipeline Trail. Your specialist guide greets you at the hotel early this morning before taking you to the park. They help you to spot and identify a wide range of tropical birds, from toucans, motmots and trogons to rare antbirds, manakins and raptors. Afterwards, climb an observation tower that rises above the forest canopy, offering a unique perspective for spotting canopy-dwelling species such as parrots, tanagers and hummingbirds in a pristine rainforest setting. It’s possible to see monkeys, sloths and opossums here, too.
Today, head north to El Valle de Anton (approximately 2 hours, 30 minutes), where you'll stay for the next two nights. Set within an ancient volcanic caldera, the fertile valley and its surroundings host substantial biodiversity. It's an ideal base for those who love nature and the great outdoors.
The rugged topography of the area offers excellent hiking, with dramatic vistas of rolling hills and cloud forests. The 'India Dormida' (so named because its profile resembles that of a sleeping girl) is a short but steep, moderate-to-challenging hike along the ridge line of the volcanic crater, overlooking the town. There's also the option to explore the area on two wheels or simply relax and enjoy the nature around you.
Today, head north to Santa Catalina, a laid-back fishing village on the Pacific Coast and gateway to the UNESCO-protected, wildlife-rich Coiba National Park.
Coiba Island
Today, visit Coiba Island, the biggest in Central America and one of the world’s largest marine parks. For 90 years, it served as a penal colony and, due to restricted access, about 80% of its natural resources survived intact. For this reason, the island possesses a high variety of endemic species, some of which have largely disappeared from the rest of Panama. Today, you have the opportunity to see wildlife teeming within the national park: both above and below the water.
Depart the coast for now before travelling North to Boquete and the mountainous cloud forest region, which borders Costa Rica. Located in the Chiquiri Province on the west coast of Panama, Boquete is a small town surrounded by coffee plantations and volcanic scenery. There are all kinds of activities on offer here, from hiking, rafting and zip-lining to more wildlife-focused trips, with this being one of the most productive and easily accessed areas for spotting the elusive resplendent quetzal.
Today, you’re collected by your guide to explore the other end of the Pipeline Trail in the Bajo Mono forest. Explore the cloud forest characteristic of this area, and an important habitat for monkeys, reptiles and amphibians, we well as the revered resplendent quetzal. Today’s walk concludes at a beautiful 40-metre-tall waterfall, before continuing the trail and heading back to your hotel. The walk is about three hours long, mostly on flat terrain, with some steep sections.
Baru Volcano
This morning, you’re met bright and early by your guide and driven to Baru Volcano in a 4×4 jeep. You're taken up through some challenging terrain in the jeep, through five different climatic zones, with your guide pointing out wildlife along the way. Upon reaching the top, you're rewarded with views of the valley and, on a clear day, both the Caribbean and Pacific oceans.
Today, you’re driven around two hours east to the Pacific Coast and Boca Chica, the gateway to the Gulf of Chiriqui National Park, an archipelago of 25 islands.
This morning, take a four-hour discovery cruise of the Gulf of Chiriqui. Depending upon the local conditions and tides, the captain takes you to two different islands with time for swimming and snorkelling. Along the way, you may be fortunate enough to spot dolphins, turtles, rays and flying fish.
Today is a full day at leisure to relax or arrange an additional excursion locally.
Today, you're collected and taken to the airport in David for your short domestic flight to Panama City. Upon arrival, you're met and taken to your hotel for one last night before heading home tomorrow.
You have the day at leisure until, at the agreed time, you're collected and taken to the airport for your chosen flights back to the UK, arriving the following day.
