Experience Highlights

  • Duration: 3 hours

The well-known SOuth WEst TOwnship, is a cluster of townships on the South – Western part of Johannesburg and was created in the 1930’s. Black people were relocated there from the ‘black spots’ in the inner city – neighbourhoods which the apartheid government had reserved for the whites.  Soweto was the centre of political campaigns aimed at the overthrow of the apartheid state.

With a population of over 2 million, the township is the biggest black urban settlement in Africa.

Here you will see Nelson Mandela’s house, which today is a museum, as well as the mansion belonging to Winnie Madikizela-Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s house. Enjoy lunch in one of the local Shebeen / Tavern (at own expense) before being taken back to your hotel.
