Experience Highlights

  • Type: Group Experience

Your private guide and private driver will collect you from your hotel and take you in your private 4-wheel drive vehicle on an excursion to the Tsinjoriake Protected Area, about half an hour's drive to the south of Tulear. Classified as a protected harmonious landscape including St Augustin Bay; the flat-topped sandstone La Table hill and Sarodrano cave, the 5,900 ha area extends to the mouth of the Onilahy River.  During these excursions, you can include stops at some seldom-visited beach sites and perhaps a settlement of the Veso people. Saint-Augustin village is set in a bay between two huge rocky walls plunging vertically into the ocean.

Birding is rewarding, with 7 of the 10 bird regional endemics of Southern Madagascar being present. The low, drought-resistant vegetation known as 'coral ragg scrub' is home to the likes of Verreaux’s and Green-capped Couas, Lafresnaye's and Red-shouldered vangas and Littoral rock-thrush, among others. Flamingos are often seen at the mangrove areas.

Active travellers wishing to climbing La Table, can take in a panoramic 360 ° view of the coast; followed by checking out the the mangroves; swimming and some snorkelling. Sarodrano Cave, where one can learn about the traditional ceremonies practised by the resident people, is worth a stop. It is filled with clear, brackish water under a rocky overhang. Keep an eye open for endemic birds along the path to the cave. At the arrowhead- shaped Sarodrano peninsula there's a white sand beach where you might wish to enjoy a swim. Depending on your schedule, lunch and/or breakfast at the relaxed seaside Residence Eden Ecolodge, will be included.
