Experience Highlights
- Type: Group Experience
From July to October in the Nosy Be area, you can enjoy a boat excursion to seek whale sharks, humpback whales, marine turtles and other marine life. Our preferred local operator for these activities is Les Baleines Rand'eau, which operates to a high standard with responsible ethics in mind. Humpback whales tend to arrive into Malagasy waters in July and may be present as late as October in the Mozambique Channel. Whale sharks congregate in the Nosy Be region from around the end of August to early December. Turtles, rays and other reef creatures are present year-round. The starting point for this shared experience is usually from Nosy Lodge at about 8:30 am (time will be confirmed with you locally) and excursions are guaranteed on a minimum of four participants. (A maximum of 12 participants, plus one skipper are permitted on the boat). Strict guidelines are adhered to when it comes to distance which boats are required to maintain from whales. You're, however, permitted to don snorkels and fins to swim near to the whale sharks. For whale sharks, the code of conduct adhered to has been established by the Madagascar Whale Shark Project. We recommend you take a drybag, to protect camera gear, and reef-friendly sunscreen. Lunch is included in the excursion.
