Little Governors' Camp tented camp is set by the Mara River in Kenya’s renowned Masai Mara National Reserve. The unfenced camp is built around a waterhole where there is good birding, as well as the spectacle of animals coming to drink.

Seventeen spacious and very comfortable tents are spread out and tucked among the trees. Tents have en suite bathrooms with hot and cold running water. Each has a private verandah from which to watch the wildlife. Gas and kerosene lanterns provide a traditional safari atmosphere.

Little Governors’ is in a prime game-viewing area. Not only do the Governors’ camps occupy the location once reserved for Kenya’s colonial governor, but the Big Cat Diary was filmed in this part of the Mara. The savannah supports plains game and herds of elephant and buffalo, prey for the cats for which the area is renowned. The bush around Rhino Ridge may provide sightings of one of the rare Black rhino. The Governors’ camps are on the route of the annual Great Migration. Little Governors’ is one of the few camps to offer three daily game drives with experienced driver-guides: one before breakfast, another mid-morning and the third in the afternoon. Game walks in a private concession area adjacent to the reserve, and accompanied by a qualified guide, are offered (extra cost), as are early morning balloon safaris.

The main camp area includes an open bar and dining tent with views over the plains, marsh and escarpment. The curio shop stocks a range of crafts and souvenirs. A professional beauty therapist is on hand to provide a choice of in-room spa treatments (advance booking advised).

Morning tea/coffee is served in your tent with the morning wake-up call. An excellent buffet breakfast awaits your return from the dawn game drive, with another good buffet for lunch. Dinner is à la carte. Weather permitting, breakfast and lunch are served outdoors, while dinner is served either in the candlelit dining tent or under starlit African skies.

Governors’ Camps support four schools in Kenya, one at Mara Rianda in the Koiyake Lemek Wildlife Trust area, which borders the Mara. Governors’ financed the construction of five classrooms, a library and accommodation for six teachers and installed solar lighting. It had equipped the classrooms, pays the salaries of four teachers and funds a number of bursaries. Guests can visit the school and make their own contributions. Funds from the BBC Big Cat Diary film units will be used to replace the mud and wattle classrooms with a permanent building with washroom facilities. Governors’ Camps has installed a bio-gas plant in one of the largest manyattas with the objective of reducing wood consumption and freeing women from the time-consuming task of wood-collecting.
