Kicheche Laikipia Camp is intimate tented camp in the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, on the equator in northern Kenya. Run by a highly experienced team, including managers Andy and Sonja Webb, you will find a variety of excellent game activities without the crowds, delicious meals, expansive hospitality and a real commitment to helping you make the most of your stay.

Accommodation

Six custom-made, luxury tents provide the accommodation at Kicheche Laikipia. Each has en suite facilities and a private verandah overlooking the waterhole. One tent can accommodate a third person. Solar-powered electricity is provided round the clock, though you will need to recharge your electrical equipment in the lounge tent.

Camp Facilities

The spacious lounge and dining tent is a comfortable place to relax or have a pre-dinner drink. At this altitude, the two stone fireplaces provide welcome warmth at night – and the right atmosphere. Drinks are usually served around the campfire and delicious meals enjoyed under the African skies. A typical dinner might be tender cuts of beef with a Kicheche chutney, roast potatoes, fresh local vegetables followed by pears in chocolate sauce. You may want to purchase a copy of the Kicheche cookery book to reproduce the delicious chutneys and baked goods at home.

Activities

The Kicheche camps make a point of their flexible schedules and guests can decide on their programme at camp. Game drives are offered in customised 4WD safari vehicles that allow everyone to have an unobstructed view; and, if you get up early, you may be rewarded with the spectacular sight of the sun rising behind Mt. Kenya. Even in the heat of mid-day, you are likely to see game drinking and resting in the shade around the waterholes, Wasonyero River and in the marshland. The Kicheche camps have a lot of experience in meeting the needs of serious photographers.

You can also go walking in the savannah with one of the guides and visit the chimpanzee sanctuary, which rehabilitates chimps rescued from West Africa, or the wildlife education centre. Horse riding is planned for the near future.

Wildlife

Ol Pejeta contains Kenya's largest population of Black rhino, numerous elephant, cheetah, lion, leopard and abundant plains game. The rarer northern species – Grevy’s zebra, Jackson’s Hartebeest, Reticulated giraffe and Beisa Oryx – are also present. Nocturnal species include serval, civet, honey badger, genet, aardvark and zorilla.
Birders will find Kicheche Laikipia most rewarding.

Location

Kicheche Laikipia Camp is about 40 minutes’ drive from Nanyuki, for guests arriving on scheduled flights, or 30 minutes from Ol Pejeta airstrip. Driving from Nairobi takes roughly 4 hours.
