Experience Highlights

  • Duration: Half-day

After breakfast, your guide will collect you from the hotel. Head out by speedboat on the deep Lake Tana, for the densly-wooded Zeghie (Zege) Peninsula to see some of its famed monasteries. While on board your private boat, keep an eye out for a variety of birds as well as the traditional reef 'tankwa' boats crossing the lake. After a short hike through local villages and coffee plots, you will reach the monastery of Ura Kidane Meret, where you can view a noteworthy collections of Ethiopian crosses and crowns dating back to the 16th century. The colourful and well-preserved painting, tell stories about Ethiopian saints, which your guide will explain. The second monastery you visit, Azwa Maryam, is a small and pleasant site with gardens and a humorous young priest. Return to the hotel and after lunch, visit the vibrant town for its interesting market and the panoramic view from Bezawit Palace.
