Caño Negro Tour

Today visit one of Central America's most important wetland areas, a wonderful habitat for wildlife. You will be picked up at your hotel and driven to Los Chiles, a culturally mixed village only 4 km from the Nicaraguan border. Here your boat waits for your river adventure, where you begin your 2½ hour floating safari through the tropical rain forest. This isolated refuge has an incredible diversity of wildlife. There are said to be 350 species of birds found in the area. Your guide will explain how these animals fit into the wetland ecosystem. In the shallows you might see caimans and turtles. Monkeys and sloths sometimes gather in the trees near the banks of the river. There is a lizard in this area called the Jesus Christ lizard, known for its ability to walk on the water. Some birds are residents in the area and it is possible to see hundreds of them especially during the dry season. Some of them are Anhinga or Snake - bird, Roseate Spoonbill, wood Storks, the Jabiru, the largest bird in Central America and very endangered. Also the Olivaceous Cormorant, that makes its nest in the area, it is also the most popular bird in the area.
