Experience Highlights

  • Duration: 4 hours

This tour explores the most important archaeological sites in San Pedro de Atacama, Chile’s archaeological capital, and offers an insight into the way of life of the Atacama or Licanantai culture. The first stop is at the Aldea de Tulor (Tulor village), one of the oldest archaeological ruins originally inhabited by a community that was crucial for the transition to sedentary life. Visit Pukara de Quito (Quito fortress) built by Atacama settlers more than 700 years ago to defend themselves from other communities in South America, the site was declared a National Monument in 1982. The nearby Granja Atacameña (Atacama farm) shows how a family combines ancestral farming and shepherding traditions with tourism. The tour ends with a visit to San Pedro’s main square to see its recently remodelled adobe church. Built in the 16th century, its construction was the focal point around which the village of San Pedro gradually established itself.
