With its dramatic landscapes, cosmopolitan cities and lively culture, Argentina is a traveller’s delight. From the glaciers of Patagonia and elegant boulevards of Buenos Aires to soaring Andean mountains, the dusty heat of the pampas and jungles in the north, it is a country of immense beauty. It is also a vast land, stretching almost 3,500 kilometres from its northern border with Bolivia to the tip of South America. It is most commonly associated with sensuous tango dancing, passionate football and impressive steaks, but offers much else besides.
Buenos Aires
Most Argentina holidays rightly include several days in the capital, Buenos Aires, where the influence of European settlers can be seen in much of the architecture. This, together with gourmet restaurants and old-world cafés, designer shopping and outdoor markets, plus a buzzing nightlife make BA a thoroughly enjoyable metropolis.
Mendoza & Córdoba
To the west of the capital you can visit Mendoza, where the good climate and rich soils combine to produce exceptional vineyards, or travel to Córdoba where you can incorporate a few nights on an estancia (a working ranch) into most Argentina holidays.
Humahuaca Gorge & Iguassu
In the far northwest, the landscape changes to desert. See salt flats, the amazing Hill of the Seven Colours and the cactus-filled Humahuaca Gorge, before heading north east to the thundering Iguassu Falls on the Argentinia/Brazil border.
Valdes Peninsula & the Lakes District
To the south of the capital the Valdes Peninsula has prolific marine life, with highlights that include colonies of penguins, elephant seals and Southern Right whales. The landscape here is flat, but as you head inland towards the Andes you’ll reach the impossibly scenic Lakes District. Here there are over 20 beautiful lakes on the Argentine side alone.
Patagonia
In the south Patagonia is an area of jagged mountain peaks and magnificent glaciers - the Perito Moreno Glacier is one of the continent’s greatest natural wonders. Fitzroy National Park is a great region for trekking or fly south to Ushuaia to Tierra del Fuego from where you can take a cruise on the Beagle Channel, board an expedition boat to Antarctica or sail through straits and channels via Cape Horn to Chile.
