Argentina Holidays

The dramatic landscapes, cosmopolitan cities and lively culture, make holidays to Argentina a traveller’s delight. From the glaciers of Patagonia and elegant boulevards of Buenos Aires, to soaring Andean mountains and the dusty heat of the pampas and jungles in the north, it is a country of immense beauty. It is also a vast land, stretching almost 3,500 kilometres from its northern border with Bolivia to the tip of South America. It is most commonly associated with sensuous tango dancing, passionate football and impressive steaks, but this is just for starters… Argentina holidays offer much more besides.

Buenos Aires

Most Argentina holidays include several days in Buenos Aires, the capital, where the influence of European settlers can be seen in much of the architecture and elegant boulevards. With its gourmet restaurants and old-world cafés, designer shops and outdoor markets, and the buzzing nightlife, BA is a thoroughly enjoyable metropolis.

Córdoba and the Gaucho experience

Located right in the centre of the country, just an hour’s flight from Buenos Aires, Córdoba is Argentina’s second most important city. It has a fine historic centre and there are many good estancias within easy reach that offer hiking and fishing as well as the traditional gaucho/riding experience.

The Northwest and the Northeast

The contrast in Argentina’s diverse landscapes is immense. To the west of the capital near the border with Chile, Mendoza’s good climate and rich soils combine to produce exceptional vineyards where visitors can sample some of Argentina’s very best wines. Many holidays to Argentina include a few days staying on a vineyard with the opportunity to practise wine tasting skills and enjoy local cuisine. Further north towards Salta the landscape changes to rocky desert and it is here the striking Hill of the Seven Colours and the cactus-filled Humahuaca Gorge are located.

In the far northeast the lush and thundering Iguazu Falls straddle the Argentine/Brazilian border and are a ‘must see’ on any holiday to Argentina. Near by, the Iberá Wetlands are an important fresh water reservoir and home to an abundance of wildlife including marsh deer, anacondas, Cayman and Howler monkeys. Plans to make the area a nation park are still ongoing.

Valdes Peninsula & the Lake District

Around a thousand miles south of the capital, the Valdes Peninsula juts out into the South Atlantic to the east of Patagonia. Here there is prolific marine life including colonies of penguins, elephant seals and Southern Right whales. Perfect for wildlife enthusiasts this area should be missed if you are looking for holidays to Argentina that are rich in wildlife experiences. The landscape here is flat, but as you head inland towards the Andes you reach the breathtakingly scenic Lake District, where the mountains form a natural border between Argentina and Chile.  Here there are over 20 beautiful lakes on the Argentine side alone and you can cross over the border into the Chilean Lake District for a complete Lakeland experience.

Located at the southern tip of South America, the iconic region of Patagonia takes in both Argentina and Chile. Usually reached by a three hour flight from Buenos Aires to Ushuaia, Patagonia is a vast area of colossal mountain ranges crowned with snowy tops and adorned by pristine glaciers that descend into vivid turquoise lakes. The towering frozen plains of the Perito Moreno Glacier and the icy Largo Argentina are key attractions in the famous Parque Nacional Los Glaciares (Glaciers National Park) and are world-class natural wonders. These unique vistas really do represent Argentina holidays at their most spectacular.

A short flight southwards from Ushuaia to Tierra del Fuego is the route for those wanting to take a cruise on the Beagle Channel, board an expedition boat to Antarctica or sail through straits and channels via Cape Horn to Chile.
