A classic 10 night walking safari in the South Luangwa, staying at the intimate Norman Carr camps, enjoying a mix of guided walking safaris and safari drives in open vehicles with some of Zambia’s top guides. Your first two nights are spent at Kapani Camp followed by eight nights in remote bush camps (normally two nights at each)
Depart from London Heathrow on the overnight flight to Lusaka via Nairobi or Johannesburg.
On arrival, you will be met and assisted onto the flight to Mfuwe, where you will be met and taken through the villages of Mfuwe to your Lodge. After brunch, you have time to relax, enjoy the good size pool or engage in informal wildlife-watching before tea and the afternoon game drive in the game-rich Mfuwe area of the South Luangwa. After sundowners, you will continue on a night drive to seek nocturnal species, including civet, porcupine and genet. Predators like lion and leopard are also active at this hour. Return to camp for dinner.
Accommodation: Mchenja Bush Camp
Wildlife is abundant in the Mfuwe area - and the birding is fantastic. The chief predators are lion, leopard and spotted hyena, and wild dog are sometimes sighted. Their prey includes plentiful puku and impala, eland, kudu and bushbuck. You may see Cookson's wildebeest and Crawshay's zebra, sub-species unique to the South Luangwa Valley, as well as large herds of buffalo and elephant.
Expect to cross the bridge over the Luangwa River (usually stopping on the bridge for your guide to point out the extraordinary number of crocodiles and hippos) for game drives - in this area, you may well encounter a few other safari vehicles; but Norman Carr Safaris also uses a private pontoon which can sometimes be used for direct access to a less accessible section of the park.
Travel deep into the South Luangwa National Park to Luwi Bushcamp, near a permanent lagoon, for your first walking safari. You will be accompanied by your safari guide and an armed scout as you track big game on foot. Your guide will show you the tracks and signs he uses.
Accommodation: Luwi Bush Camp
Walking safari in the Luwi area, perhaps visiting the hippo hide set up over the nearby Luwe lagoon. Sightings may include prides of lion, hyena, wild dog, puku, buffalo, reedbuck and hartebeest - plenty of excitement!
Walk around 10 km along the course of the Luwi River - a tributary of the Luangwa - to Nsolo, where brunch and your luggage will be waiting. Wild dog regularly den between Luwi and Nsolo and elephant and buffalo are frequently seen around camp, frequenting the waterhole in the sweeping bend of the sand river where Nsolo nestles under tall trees.
Accommodation: Nsolo Bush Camp
Walking safari in area the around Nsolo, which looks over a bend in the seasonal river.
Journey about 10 km further down the course of the Luwi - on foot or on a 4WD game drive â to its confluence with the Luangwa River and Kakuli Bushcamp. At Kakuli, you have views of a section of the river inhabited by several pods of hippo. With the dense leopard population, night drives are often most rewarding. Elephant are frequently around camp and lion are abundant.
Accommodation: Kakuli Bush Camp
Game-viewing on foot and safari vehicle in the Kakuli area.
Journey to Mchenja Camp, in a beautiful ebony grove on the west bank of the Luangwa River, opposite the Nsefu sector.
Mchenja is more luxurious than the other bushcamps - the camp has a plunge pool and the tents have baths, as well as showers - and provides a bit of relaxation, as well as superb game-viewing. Walks are usually focused on the wooded area around the river; game drives often explore the Lion Plain and Fish Eagle Lagoon area to the north. Again, you may be lucky and spot wild dog and lion and leopard are frequently seen.
Accommodation: Mchenja Bush Camp
On safari at Mchenja.
Depart for Mfuwe Airport for your flight to Lusaka to connect with return overnight scheduled flights via Nairobi or Johannesburg.
