Reunion offers beaches, lavishly forested mountains and volcanoes all tightly packed in this small yet modern island. This beach holiday combines a moderately easy hike through spectacular scenery and overnight stay in Cirque Mafate with a week on the beach at the five star LUX* Ile de la Réunion

Cirque de Mafate is the wildest and driest of all three Cirques of La Reunion. Barely reachable and scarcely populated, the Cirque de Mafate is accessible only on foor, or by helicopter. With no streets and no cars, it is a hiking paradise. Acclimatise to Reunion with a two night stay at the LUX. Then transfer to the drop off point for the hike through spectacular scenery into Cirque de Mafate. A three hour hike, plus an hour or more for photography, brings you to the village of La Nouvelle where you stay overnight in a simple mountain hiking hut. The following day fly out of the Cirque de Mafate by helicopter for jaw dropping views. Your beach holiday ends with 4 nights at the LUX.

Itinerary

Day 1 London

Depart on London, and some regional airports, to Paris and connect with onward overnight flight to Reunion.

Day 2 LUX* lle de la Reunion

On arrival you will be met and transferred to the LUX* Ile de la Réunion where you stay in a superior room for two nights, breakfast included. Settle in, acclimatise, take a walk on the beach and marvel at the ocean and mountain views.

Day 3 LUX* lle de la Reunion

Enjoy snorkelling and swimming in the reef protected lagoon, or the hotels gigantic swimming pool - the largest on the island. Relax in the extensive tropical gardens and dine well in preparation for tomorrows hike into the mountains. Your room is held for the night you are in the mountains so all of your luggage may remain in your room, pack only an overnight back-pack for tomorrow’s adventure.

Day 4 Cirque de Mafate

Depart the hotel after an early breakfast to make the best of the morning weather before the clouds close in on the Cirques in the afternoons. You will be transferred to the outer slopes of the Cirque and dropped off at the parking zone at Col des Boeufs. From here start the ascent, and then descent into Cirque de Mafate. The trail is classified as moderate and is readily tacked by scrambling 7 yr olds to fit 70 yr olds. Hike through varied terrain, including a slippery rocky trail, some stepped areas, muddy stretches and through lush verdant forests. The trail then emerges into the Plaine des Tamarins, flanked by ancient Tamarind trees. After around 3 hours hiking you arrive at the rural village of La Nouvelle around midday. Find a cafeteria for lunch or purchase some items from one of the local stores for an al fresco picnic. Tonight you stay in a simple, comfortable mountain hiking hut with communal ablution facilities. Enjoy a French-Creole style dinner in the company of your hosts and fellow hikers.

Day 5 Cirque de Mafate - LUX* lle de la Reunion

After 'petit dejeuner' you may like to stretch your legs, before rendezvousing at the helipad. Exit the Cirque de Mafate by helicopter, enjoying epic views as the helicopter whisks you over the cirques and back to the coast. You will be transferred back to the LUX where you stay for four nights in a superior room with breakfast included.

Day 6 LUX* lle de la Reunion

At leisure at LUX* Ile de la Réunion. Explore the lagoon by kayak, stretch your legs on the tennis court, get nimble with a game of table tennis, or for a more sedate winding down join in the aqua-gym sessions or Tai-Chi-Chuan and Qi Qong courses. Diving and surfing, golf, windsurfing and paragliding are available nearby

Day 9 Reunion - London

Final day at leisure before transferring to the airport for the flight via Paris to London or your regional airport.
