Itinerary

Day 1 UK - Cuzco

Depart the UK for your overnight flight with Avianca to Bogota and connection to Cuzco.

Day 2 Cuzco - Sacred Valley

On arrival to the Inca capital of Cuzco transfer directly to the lower altitude of the Sacred Valley. Settle into the Belmond Hotel Rio Sagrado, located on the banks of the Urubamba River. Set to a backdrop of towering mountains, this luxury hotel reflects the style of a typical Andean village. Daytime sunshine can be enjoyed at the hotels outdoor swimming pool or with a refreshing drink overlooking the gently flowing river. Dine at El Huerto restaurant to the romantic glow of candlelight as you indulge in local specialities such as Andean trout ceviche, chicken scented in pisco or alapca tenderloin.

Day 3 Sacred Valley

Scratch beneath the surface of the Sacred Valleys of the Incas. Charming, indigenous villages such as Chinchero are deeply ingrained in the local culture. Admire the colourful weaving from hand dyed wool, spun in a traditional way. One of the valleys key towns is Ollantaytambo with its cobbled narrow streets. The towns towering Inca fortress is well known as the one of the few places where the Spanish conquistadors lost a major battle.

Day 4 Sacred Valley - Machu Picchu

At Ollantaytambo train station embark the Vistadome train to Aguas Calientes, the closest town to Machu Picchu. Weaving through the mountainous landscape, the anticipations builds until you finally board the bus for the switchback journey to famous Inca citadel. At the site, take your time to explore and learn about the history of the construction of this 'lost city'. The Belmond Sanctuary Lodge has a prime location at the entrance gate to Machu Picchu, ideal for lunch before returning for sunset. In the evening retreat to your cosy mountain top hotel for dinner at Tampu restaurant.

Day 5 Machu Picchu - Cuzco

As dawn breaks, return to Machu Picchu for sunrise, experiencing the magical energy as a new day awakens. Early morning is the perfect opportunity for photographs in the soft light and eerie quiet. Climb the steep staircase of Wanay Picchu mountain or trek to the Sun Gate (Inti Punku) for further magical views. For the journey to Cuzco, board the Hiram Bingham train, decorated in the style of 1920s Pullman carriages. Dine in one of the restaurant cars, simply but stylishly decorated. After dinner, relax in the bar car to the sounds of Peruvian music. Arrive to Cuzco late evening, where the history and luxury of Belmond Hotel Monasterio awaits.

Day 6 Cuzco

Cuzco is a treasure chest of colonial treasures. The Plaza de Armas main square is flanked by the imposing Cathedral. Its construction started in 1559 and took almost a century to complete and today is synonymous with the city's image. Inside, repositories of colonial art adorn the walls. The blocks for the Cathedral's construction were pilfered from the impressive fortress of Sacsaywaman. Overlooking the city, this site feels huge, although only a fifth of the original structure remains. The views to Cuzco downtown are spectacular on a clear day. Nearby are the ruins of Q'enqo, Pukapukara and Tambomachay, all worth a visit to admire the Inca masonry techniques.

Day 7 Cuzco

Belmond Hotel Monasterio is a former monastery and national monument, dating from 1592. Enjoy a leisurely breakfast in Illary restaurant, nestled in the cloisters overlooking the central courtyard with the opportunity to dine outside on warm, sunny mornings. Meander the cobbled streets of Cuzco taking in a visit to the Museo de Arte Precolombino (MAP). Artefacts depict highlights from the Nazca and Moche (pre Inca) cultures along with pre-Columbian art. The San Blas area is best for souvenier shopping in the artisan quarter. Browse a selection of handmade alpaca clothes, jewellery and typical Andean ceramics.

Day 8 Cuzco - Puno, Lake Titicaca, Luxury Belmond Sleepe

Embark on Belmond's Peruvian Highlands journey through the Andes and settle into your luxurious stateroom for the 2 night journey. Leaving the Inca capital of Cuzco you are transported to a magical mountain landscape dotted with farming terraces and patchwork style fields. After lunch visit the village of Raqchi and the archaeological site, Templo de Viracocha. Once an Inca checkpoint, the ruins resemble an aqueduct. Afternoon tea is served on board as the train continues to La Raya, the highest point on the journey at 4313m. Soak up a sensational sunset as you prepare for an elegant dinner on board.

Day 9 Lake Titicaca - Luxury Belmond Sleeper Train

Wake up early for sunrise over shimmering Lake Titicaca, watching the colours change as the cold night chill evaporates. After a delicious breakfast, set sail on the highest navigable lake in the world. The Uros people live a traditional life on islands constructed from tortura reeds. Continue to beautiful Taquile Island overlooked by the snowcapped mountains. Lunch is served on Collata Beach, with entertainment from traditional dancers and artisanal workers. After a magical day on the lake, depart Puno towards Arequipa.

Day 10 Luxury Belmond Sleeper Train to Arequipa - Lima

After breakfast, depart to the spellbinding, rugged scenery of Lake Lagunillas. At an altitude of 4400m, take in the mesmerising blue and green colours. A peaceful, solitude spot look out for pink flamingos dotted across the barren backdrop. Visit Sumbay Caves, home to fascinating cave paintings that estimated to be almost 8,000 years old. Andean specialities are served for your final lunch in the stylish dining car as the train continues to the 'White City' of Arequipa, taking in the dramatic canyon landscape. Leave the sumptuous Belmond train behind with many fond memories as your final adventure in Lima awaits.

Day 11 Lima

Overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Belmond Miraflores Park hotel occupies a prime location in Lima. A city of contrast, we have included some key spots to visit including the colonial downtown centre around the Plaza de Armas, the modern neighbourhood of San Isidro and the Larco Herrera Musuem. Learn about the Treasures of Ancient Peru from the museum's collection of over 45,000 artefacts before lunch at Cafe Larco. Savour the restaurant ambience, with views over the colourful gardens. Spend a warm, sunny afternoon at the hotel's rooftop pool or indulge in a delightful massage at Zest spa.

Day 12 Lima - UK

Soak up the bohemian area of Barranco, with its grand old casonas. Around the Puente de los Suspiros (Bridge of Sighs) is the main plaza with a great selection of coffee shops like Cafe Bisetti. Visit the Galeria Lucia de la Puente, housed in a magnificent two-story 'casona' and home to Lima's most prestigious contemporary art collection. Enjoy lunch at Cala restaurant in Barranco overlooking the Pacific Ocean before transferring to the airport for your return flight to the UK.
