This memorable journey begins in the vibrant town of Salvador, the first colonial capital of Brazil. Salvador is a colourful fusion of Afro-Brazilian culture, Portuguese colonial architecture and boasts a beautiful tropical coastline. In the city, you are based at the charming Casa Amarelindo, a characterful, restored mansion in the heart of the historic Pelourinho district. Bring your hiking boots for Chapada Diamantina, the ‘diamond highlands’. Although no diamonds have been seen in recent times, the area remains a jewel for those who love the great outdoors, with sweeping views and dramatic landscapes. The best place to stay here is Pousada Canto das Aguas, built beside a river that runs through the cobble-stoned streets of the town of Lencois. Discover stunning flat-topped mountains, secret blue caves, forested valleys and beautiful waterfalls. After your outdoor adventure, you return to the city of Salvador for one more night before heading to Praia do Forte for an idyllic beach stay at Tivoli Ecoresort.

Itinerary

Leave the UK for your flight to Salvador via Lisbon. Upon your arrival in the evening, you will be taken by a private transfer to your hotel in the historic district of Pelourinho. Overlooking the Bay of Saints, the city is one of Brazil's most exotic. Samba music fills the streets, a distinct mix of Latin and African cultures come together here and the Pelourinho is the place to be!
Today on a city tour, visit the main highlights of Salvador. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Pelourinho was once the area that the Portuguese built as a fortified city and now displays some of the most important colonial architecture in the Americas. Once a centre of slave trade, the city offers a rich Afro-Brazilian feel as well as picturesque cobblestoned streets, impressive baroque churches and brightly coloured buildings.
Staying at   Casa do Amarelindo
Leave the city behind with an early morning bus (7am) taking you to Lencois (approximately 6 hours), the ever-changing landscape out of your window keeping you entertained from the comfort of your seat. Once you have arrived in Lencois, the gateway town to Chapada Diamantina, you will be taken to the hotel Pousada Canto das Aguas.
Set off to explore the great outdoors and stunning natural beauty of Chapada Diamantina. Visit the Devil's Pool (Poco do Diabo) after a 25-minute hike; this beautiful place is made up of a waterfall and natural pools surrounded by colourful rock formations. Next stop is the Lapa Doce cave (the second largest limestone cave in Brazil), then the Blue Cave (a stunning cave lake, perfect for a refreshing swim) and the Pai Inacio Table Mountain for a spectacular view from the top of the plateau.
Staying at   Canto das Aguas
Visit the Serrano Park today; one of the main attractions within the Chapada Diamantina. At Serrano discover watering holes and natural whirlpools surrounded by fascinating rock formations. Visit the Halls of Sand (Salão de Areias Coloridas), an open cave labyrinth with beautiful, coloured rocks. Further upriver, stop at the pools of Poço Halley, ideal for a refreshing dip. Visit the Spring waterfall (Cachoeira da Primaveira) and the Cachoeirinha waterfall as well as spectacular viewpoints along the way of the valley before returning to Lencois.
Staying at   Canto das Aguas
After a leisurely morning around Lencois, you will take the afternoon bus service back to Salvador. How you spend your final Salvador evening is up to you, whether you return to your favourite local restaurant or watch one of Salvador's famous folklore dance shows.
Staying at   Casa do Amarelindo
Leave Salvador for your transfer north along the road known as the 'Coconut Highway' (because of the number of plantations) to the coastal town of Praia do Forte. A former fishing village it takes its name from the castle built by a Portuguese settler, Garcia D'Avila. It is now a charming resort town, with many roads made of sand. Spend the next three nights at Tivoli Ecoresort set on a 12km stretch of beach.
Transfer back to Salvador this afternoon for your onwards flight to London via Lisbon.
