Anakao is a charming Veso fishing village about an hour by speedboat  to the south of Tulear on the arid south-west coast. It makes for an excellent place in which to end busy Madagascar trips such as the RN7. Anakao Ocean Lodge & Spa provides comfortable accommodation and offers various activities for very competitive rates.

Inland from Anakao, from where it can be visited as a day trip, the remarkable Tsimanampetsotsa National Park is one of the locations featured in the Attenborough documentary series. The park protects a milky blue soda lake where in season, flamingos can be seen. Clear pools in chalk caves are home to blind cave fish (Gobies) and flagship mammals include Ringtail lemur (very skittish here) and the range restricted but locally common Grandidier's vontsira.

Getting to Anakao is achieved by means of speedboat transfers from Tulear port. Currently, the latest that the lodge will operate these transfers is 09h30, due to rough seas. From Anakao, the drive to Tsimanampetsotsa National park is about 2 hours on rough roads. The transfers are operated in Unimog trucks.
