Majete wildlife reserve is one of the success stories of Malawi. After decades of poaching, illegal encreoachment and hard wood logging had decimated the area, with only a few hardy species left. In 2003 African Parks, a non-profit organisation in partnership with the Malawian government and local communities, took responsibility for Majete Wildlife Reserve. Since then the park has seen significant restoration including infrastructure and wildflife restocking. With the reintroduction of Lions in the last few years into Majete, it is now the only official Big 5 Game Park in Malawi. While the Lion are a big draw to the reserve, there is also Leopard, Black Rhino and Elephant. With Sable, Buffalo, Eland, Kudu Suni, Klipspringer, Lichtenstein's Harebeest and Zebra as well as a wide variety of Birds.
Due to the history of poaching in the past, some species are more timid than others. It is easy to tell thedifferencebetween a Zambian Zebra and a Malawian Zebra as the latter runs away!
