Embark on an extraordinary journey with Easter Island holidays. Easter Island (known in Chile as Isla de Pascua and locally as Rapa Nui) is a tiny remote dot in the middle of the Pacific, 6 hours by air from the mainland. Rapa Nui is most famous for its monolithic stone statues, called Moai. There are a thousand or so of these Moai scattered around the island which range in height from 10ft to 40ft and weigh more than 50 tonnes. Discovered by Admiral Roggeveen on Easter Day in 1722, Easter Island is one of the most isolated places on Earth. Its surviving local population is of mainly Polynesian descent. Most people visit Easter Island for 3 to 5 days, flying from the Chilean capital, Santiago. Local excursions are offered to the main places of interest, including the temple ruins at Vinapu, the ancient ceremonial sites and the Raro Raraku volcano where almost all the Moai were carved. Depending on the weather, you can picnic on Anakena beach where Captain Cook landed in 1774.
