Experience Highlights

  • Duration: 2 days

For a unique experience, camp within the jungle community and the archeological site of Uaxactun. Learn all about this fascinating Mayan temple site as well as what life is like within the jungle and for the local community. Developed by our Guatemalan suppliers with the local Uaxactun community, the guide will be from the Uaxactun village. The site of Uaxactun is the oldest complete Mayan astronomical complex found and is one of the longest-occupied Mayan sites. It is also the community where the "Chicleros" (gum collectors) have lived for over 100 years. Many of Uaxactún's residents nowadays make their living from gathering forest products such as chicle (exported to Japan), allspice and xate palm leaves (ornamental plant exported to the US and used for floral arrangements).

Day 1

Enjoy a guided tour of the Uaxactun ruins, stopping at partially restored temples that align perfectly with the sun on key dates within the Mayan calendar. Within the village learn about the how the locals go about their daily life and enjoy a traditional dish prepared with locally sourced ingredients. At dusk, climb to a lookout tower for sunset drinks. Once nightfall sets in, head back to the campsite where a simple local candlelight dinner will be served. Spend the night in comfortable tents, soaking up the sounds of the jungle.

Day 2

The next morning, after breakfast, make the journey to Tikal National Park for a guided tour of this fabulous site. With huge temples rising up through the jungle canopy and a variety of tropical animals and birds on show, enjoy the sights and sounds of the howler and spider monkeys as well as many colourful tropical birds and other mammals.  This UNESCO World Heritage site is one of the best Mayan sites in Central America. In the afternoon, after a picnic lunch, continue on to your next destination.
