Harar - Hyena-feeding attendance

Your guide and driver will collect you from your hotel or guesthouse after dark. Drive with them to a bare plot on the city outskirts, where your vehicle will be parked. Only the headlights will be left on, shining over the 'hyena-man', who sits in the middle of the plot, with a basket of meat scraps. As he calls out plaintively, the Hyenas - up to 30 or even as many as 50, arrive like ghostly spectres and surround him, waiting for handouts. The hyena-man feeds these wild but well habituated Spotted hyenas by hand, and even by mouth! It is an extraordinary spectacle. We recommend you stay very still, and close to the vehicle while observing the feeding. As soon as the meat supply has run out, the hyenas melt silently back into the darkness. You will be transferred back to your hotel or guesthouse to overnight.
