The tour starts out from Puerto Varas heading to Pargua, a small Chilean village in the Calbuco district, located on the northern bank of the Chacao canal and where the so-called “orderly coast” of Chile ends, giving way to the archipelagos. From here visitors board a ferry and after a 30-minute cruise, arrive to the town of Chacao, in the Ancud district.
A brief break follows to visit the church and before moving on to the city of Castro, Chile’s third oldest city in continued existence. Founded in February 1567 it is widely known for its “palafitos” or colourful houses built on stilts above the water. The trip continues to Dalcahue to visit a famed crafts fair (only open on Sundays) where woven fabrics and regional basketry items are up for sale. There will be time to walk the city and visit the shops and/or churches. Next is a stop at a restaurant in Castro for lunch (optional) and in the afternoon a local church is visited, as well as Barrio Gamboa to view the palafittes.
