Kapani Lodge, South Luangwa National Park
On arrival make your way through immigration, purchase visa and collect your luggage. Proceed through the airport to the domestic departures area where a representative will assist you onto light aircraft flight to Mfuwe Airport, the gateway to South Luangwa which will take just over an hour.
On arrival you will be met and transferred by road through the villages of Mfuwe to Kapani Lodge for a 3 night stay, which was once the home of Norman Carr, arguably Zambia's greatest conservationist, is set on a permanent lagoon, with beautiful rooms nestled among towering shade trees. The lodge has a main deck, reached by steps or a gentle slope, with a bar and a fire pit, and overlooking the lagoon and the plain where many animals may be seen. Enjoy a Zambian mosi beer at the bar while talking to Chitumbi, Kapani's famous barman and philosopher. Or cool yourself in Kapani's swimming pool, set discreetly at the far end of the lodge's grounds.
South Luangwa National Park is Zambia's best known national park, famous for its population of leopard, lion and elephant. The lifeblood of the park is the winding Luangwa River which forms the eastern boundary of the park and twists and turns, cutting a swathe through the floodplains. The Luangwa is a constantly evolving river - oxbow lagoons form as the river finds an easier course and these are a mecca both for the hippos and crocodiles which live in them, but also for the elephants, buffalo, giraffe, lion, leopard and other wildlife which rely on them as a source of water.
At Kapani, you'll be guided by some of Luangwa Valley's top guides. Activities here focus on day and night game drives. In addition, the lodge can organise for you to visit a local school or craft centre, should you wish.

Kakuli Bush Camp, South Luangwa National Park
Today, as your morning activity, you will be transferred on to Kakuli Bush Camp, by boat, travelling up the Luangwa River for a 4 night stay. As the river winds and bends, you'll notice a real change in the landscape, becoming less bushy, and with more open plains.
Kakuli Bushcamp is situated on the confluence of the Luwi sand river and the mighty Luangwa River - surrounded by open plains dotted with young rain trees and taller tamarind trees. The camp is very open, and has a lagoon in front of the main area which attracts a variety of wildlife, including impala, puku, baboons and elephant. The main area is a large round thatched room with a deck overlooking the lagoon and the river. Your activities here will focus on walking in the mornings when the temperature is cooler, and evening river cruises, exploring the channels and waterways which open up when the river is high. The cruise is rounded off with a sundowner, floating gently on the current, as the Luangwa shows you one of her spectacular sunsets.
