Selous Safari and Pemba Island Escape

Tanzania      Zanzibar

This 10 day itinerary is a wonderful combination of two exceptional safari and island destinations, both benefitting from fewer tourists then over Africa locations, with the added bonus of incredible savings. Discover the untamed wilderness of the continent’s largest game reserve, Selous, with a completely wild safari in the African bush. Less overrun with safari vehicles than Tanzania’s northern parks, rivers and lakes thread through the Selous providing a vital lifeline to a huge number of animals.

The vast land is home to Africa’s largest elephant and wild dog populations with strong numbers of buffalo, hippo, crocodile, lion, giraffe, hyena, wildebeest and impala; all coming together for the spectacular and thrilling display of predator versus prey. The birdlife is just as exciting and diverse with over 450 species. Your light aircraft flight from Tanzania Airport will whisk you to the south of the country for three nights in the Sand Rivers Selous where you will enjoy lavish accommodation and the wildlife expertise of the staff. Stay in one of the eight open-fronted stone and thatched cottages, all with panoramic views overlooking the river and the flurry of game it attracts. Your days will be filled with activities, choosing from the bush walks, fishing, cook out breakfasts and more. After your exhilarating days, spend your evenings in the lodge’s main mess area, sharing stories of your daily adventures before heading to one of the many remote dining spots tucked away in beautiful corners of the reserve.

At the end of the three night stay you will be transferred to the airstrip for a light aircraft flight, free of charge with this itinerary, to Pemba Island for the start of your paradise island escape.  A petite piece of land, just 67km long and 22km wide, Pemba Island is lacking in visitors and abundant in spice plantations, tropical fruit trees, vibrant coral reeds and pristine untouched beaches. The tranquil pace and calm atmosphere makes it the ideal relaxing and idyllic destination after the non-stop thrill of safari. For four nights you will be staying in the stylish and romantic Fundu Lagoon, a secluded and peaceful haven only accessible by boat.  Whether staying in one of the hill side rooms, with a refreshing night time breeze, or a beach front room sheltered by tropical trees and shrubs, the views of the blissful Indian Ocean are outstanding. With the soft sandy beach just steps in front of you and the soothing noises of the ocean the only sound to be heard at night, you will find it hard to return home.
