This 7-night itinerary highlights the best of Mexico City and then takes you on one of the world’s greatest railway journeys through the Copper Canyon. See the sights of this dramatic canyon before heading to the wonderfully named city of Chihuahua.

The starting point of the Copper Canyon Railway, locally known as the Chepe, is El Fuerte reached from the hub of Los Mochis on the Pacific Coast. With various overnight stays along its route, you will have plenty of time to absorb the magnificent scenery and immerse yourself in this very different side to Mexico. The Copper Canyon route is considered one of the great railway journeys of the world. Explore the amazing panorama of the Canyon landscape, including Cusarare waterfall and Lake Arareko.There is also an opportuniry to learn about the vibrant indigenous Raramuri culture and visit a local Raramuri church. 

The train route is a wonderful display of engineering with 39 bridges and 86 tunnels which which weave through the landscape and cross deep breath-taking ravines. Watch the changing micro-climates as you climb and descend the canyon complex. This short trip is a wonderful introduction to the north of Mexico.

Embark on a city tour of this bustling capital. Visit Zocalo - the main plaza of Mexico City and one of the largest plazas in the world. Discover the largest and oldest Cathedral in Latin America built in 1525 and explore the National Palace where you can admire the historic murals of Diego Rivera. Next to the Cathedral you’ll also find the Aztec ruins of Templo Mayor which were first discovered in 1978.

Mexico City - Los Mochis - El Fuerte
Fly to Los Mochis, a coastal city located around 25km from the Pacific Coast. Continue to El Fuerte, a charming colonial town and the gateway to the Copper Canyon. On arrival, check in for an overnight stay at Posada del Hidalgo, a grand colonial mansion which dates back to the 1800s.

El Fuerte - Posada Barrancas
Board the famous Chihuahua al Pacifico train early in the morning for the start of an epic railway journey into the Sierra Madre Mountains. Relax on board this comfortable train as you travel via tunnels and bridges into the heart of northern Mexico. From the train station, transfer to Posada Barancas Mirador hotel where spectacular views of the canyon can be enjoyed from every room. Spend the afternoon at leisure.

Posada Barrancas - Creel
Enjoy a free morning to enjoy this spectacular area. Those who wish can walk along the canyon rim to admire fantastic views. After lunch continue by train to Creel, a frontier logging and mining town now the tourist hub of the Copper Canyon region. Wander around the many gift shops and head to the main square where local crafts can be purchased from the Tarahumara indigenous people.

Creel - Chihuahua
Visit the main highlights of the area including Cusarare waterfall, Ramamuri church and Lake Arareko. After lunch in Creel transfer to the train station and continue to Chihuahua. This intriguing city in Mexico’s north provides more than just a base for those at the start or end of their Copper Canyon Railway journey. The city is home to grand old colonial buildings and a wealth of bars and restaurants.

Enjoy a morning city tour including a visit to the Cathedral, the Government Palace and the Museum of the Revolution which is dedicated to Pancho Villa, who was one of the most prominent Mexican Revolutionary generals. Transfer to the airport for the flight, via Mexico City to the UK. (B)
