Guyana & Tobago Experience

Guyana

Discover the secret of South America, visiting the untouched wilderness and the rich vibrant culture of Guyana before ending your holiday on the tiny idyllic Caribbean island of Tobago. Brimming with unparalleled wildlife viewing opportunities, Guyana is a unique and authentic holiday far away from the well-trodden tourist paths of neighbouring countries. This itinerary takes you to astonishing wildlife havens and is ideal for wildlife and bird watching fans.

Your Guyana expedition will start in the capital Georgetown, a delightful melting pot of British and Dutch heritage with Caribbean influences. Explore the tree lined streets, the architecture of attractive colonial wooden buildings and the collection of restaurants and bars. From here you will fly south to Annai, a small traditional village on a hilltop in the North Rupununi district. Anticipate a warm welcome with your time here a fascinating insight into the indigenous people and their way of life.

Head over to the Iwokrama Rainforest and the canopy walkway to witness the jungle from a monkey’s-eye view. As you walk across the aluminium walkway hanging 100 feet above the forest floor, you can expect to see an endless array of birds and wildlife. Come face to face with the red howler, black spider and squirrel monkeys and look down to see deers and tapirs on the forest floor. The bird watching is extraordinary with the exotic and extensive list of species you can expect to see including sapphire hummingbirds, toucans, macaws, parrots, harpy eagles and long-billed starthroat. Although no promises can be made, you may be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the elusive jaguar. During your stay at the Atta Rainforest Lodge, you will be able to walk the forest canopy at the best times to see the intriguing day to night changes; sunrise, sunset and night time.

Leave behind the crowded dense, verdant and overgrown rainforest for the wide open land and endless vistas of the Rupununi savannah, travelling across to the Rupununi River. Your base for your riverside activities will be the Karanambu Lodge, one of Guyana’s tourism highlights and home to Diane McTurk, famous for her work in rehabilitating orphaned otters.

Escape to the gorgeous, tranquil Baganara Island located on the east bank of the mighty Essequibo River. An exotic island paradise, this comfortable resort has the perfect relaxing ambience to appreciate after your Guyana adventures. Before leaving for Tobago, take a charter flight to Kaieteur and Orinduik Falls. Recognised as the crown jewels of Guyana’s vast and varied ecosystem, the Kaieteur Falls is one of the world’s largest single drop waterfalls displaying the elegance and power of nature. Fly over to the Brazilian border and the Orinduik Falls where you can throw yourself into the small waterfall, swimming underneath the tumbling waters.

For your last four nights you will fly to Tobago via Trinidad. While simply savouring the beautiful beach setting of Blue Waters Inn, tucked away in a secluded bay, you will also be able to delight in the Main Ridge Forest Reserve in the heart of the island. Declared a protected rainforest 200 years ago, the rainforest has remained untouched and untamed with the natural overgrown verdant environment home to a huge number of flora and fauna. The most outstanding of these is said to be the white-tailed sabrewing hummingbird, rare and endemic to Tobago.
