Uakari Lodge Amazon Package

From £785 per person

This unique floating lodge was created as an ecotourist experience and one of it's main objectives was to generate income for the local communities. The lodge offers 3, 4 and 7 night packages that begin on Mondays and Fridays and include walking trails, wildlife viewing by canoe, visitng local communities.

The Mariraua Reserve is home to more than 35 species of mammal, 360 species of birds, 79 repltiles and more than 300 fish species. The reserve offers easier sightings of wildlife than those areas closer to Manaus and is particularly well known for the endemic white-uakari monkey.

Other wildlife sightings may include dolphins, sloths, the razor-billed curassow, black caimans and the Harpy Eagle.

Please note that the majority of the employees of the lodge are from local communities and many do not speak fluent English, ths will include the guides.

Nature trails are on foot and by canoe in the dry season and mostly by canoe during the wet season.

Itinerary

On this trip you will visit:

Day 1
Friday - Transfer from Tefe to Uakari Lodge
You will be met at Tefe Airport and transferred to your boat for a one and a half hour river trip to the Mamiraua Reserve and Uakari Lodge. Along your journey to may spot wildlife such as pink dolphins. On arrival you will check in to the lodge and venture in to the forest on an interpretative trail.
Day 2
Saturday - Nature Trail, Presentation and Night Tour
This morning you will rise early as this is the best time to view the wildlife and the Amazon starts to stir. After breakfast you will join a nature trail by foot or canoe, these trails are designed to not be strenuous and normally last a maximum of three hours. After lunch you are invited to join a researchers presentation about ecotourism in the area, alternatively you can join another nature trail. After dinner you will venture in to the forest on a night tour looking out for nocturnal fauna including tarantula spiders, opossums, two-toed and brown throated sloths, bamboo rats and bats. This night tour is normally 40 minutes long.
Day 3
Sunday - Local Community Visit and Mamiraua Lake
You will have the opportunity to visit a local community this morning. In the afternoon you will take a motorised canoe to Lake Mamiraua where you may find pink river dolphins, hoatzins and pirarucu's a tropical freshwater fish. You will stay at the lake until sunset and return to the lodge looking out for black caimans, bats and night birds. In the evening you will have the opportunity to listen to a presentation about the Mamirauá Sustainable Development Institute – its work and its research.
