The spectacular Arenal Volcano lies in the northern highlands of Costa Rica only a few hours drive from San Jose and a short distance across Lake Arenal to Monteverde Cloudforest. As well as offering wonderful views of this active mountain, the area of La Fortuna around the volcano also offers some great nature walks on beautiful trails. An Arenal tour gives you the opportunity to see local flora and fauna in the verdant rainforest as well as enjoying more active pursuits such as canopy walkways, thrilling zip line rides and white-water rafting.
Arenal Volcano lay dormant until July 1968, when huge explosions triggered lava flows, and it has remained active ever since. It has a perfect conical shape and its degree of activity varies from week to week. However, on a clear night and at a safe distance you can usually see red-hot lava flowing and incandescent rocks jumping around the cone, although cloud cover can sometimes obscure the view. Arenal Volcano also provides the heat for nearby Tabacon's therapeutic thermal waters where you can enjoy a natural sauna beneath the waterfalls or a soak in warm mineral pools.
